I started this phrase when the d2h came out . and Now i think i can repeat it again with confidence , , not a gimmiky leader but a well thought and planned camera leader who takes its time before coming out with the next item, obviously the dx line is here to stay for the forseeble future ,and why not , the FF might come out but who will really need it , The professionals who need very big files and very sophisticated peripheral gear that go with it ,,,,, LF printers etc,,
I am ready now for DSLR..

Eric I am afraid I have to agree with your post. I am a BIG Nikon fan but they seem to be on the catch up route as of late. Nice products, but WAY behind. Hardly the leader in the field any more.

has nothing to do with whether you perceive a manufacturer as a leader.. sales are the barometer you're looking for.

also canon are so far (sure to change now) the only major manufacturer NOT to produce a prosumer unit with more than 5mp. now i know megapixels are not the be all and end all, esp on a small sensor, but it all boils down to public perception and that sort of thing.

sony got there first with the 8mp, now nikon. fuji have their 6mp cam.

swings and roundabouts eh?

canon have done rather well with the 300d and did get there earlier. good for them

tho, objectively despite being a d100 owner, the d70 certainly appears to be considerably better quality than the 300d, and better spec'd.

Nikon is the leader after all
With their latest digital cameras models, they even "discovered" the AF-assist lamp. What innovators! -grin

Perhaps the new Nikon 8700 can even match the "stellar" image quality of the Sony 828. -grin

Fasten your seat belts, it looks like we're in for a "noisy" year.

The 8700 was announced. yay. Let's see if the Nikon 2/3 sensor can handle the 3 extra MP correctly.

Personally, I'd run it at 3 to 5 MP to save space on memory as 8MP is overkill. 5MP is enough to make a great 13x19 (my printers limit).

It's all a numbers game...

MPs are the GHz of the camera world. More is better right? Wrong, a slow hard drive will be the bottleneck...that being said, i think camera companies should consentrate on lag time, write speeds, etc.

D2H

D70 = D100/10D competition (10D price drop coming for sure and D100 probably discontinued soon), not 300D. Nikon still doesn't have a sub $1000 DSLR kit.

Still no 1Ds competitor.

Still not in the top 5 market leader of P&S digitals.

What kind of leader is that? Seems like a follower to me.

That's why I come here... to LMAO on people like you.

As for D2H, I have a Phase One 20MP unit hidden in the stairs.

SOOOOOOOO TRUE.

avi, keep this in mind: Canon is the first company to release a sub-$3000 DSLR to the masses. Where's Nikon D100? Somewhere between D60 and 10D. And D70? That's AFTER Canon put the 300D on sale.

I think it was really nice for Canon to let Nikononians have a day to feel good about their company. Of course that ends when Canon makes their announcments. The 1D replacement is going to leave the 2dh in the dust. 8mp 8fps up to 40 images. The King of speed has returned.

You just have to love those pompous freaks like you. Wonderful, as far as it can be seen, there is no world outside Canon, Nikon and Sony, right???

What about Minolta? What about Fuji??? What about their 'prosumer' digital cameras???

You can be quite sure Minolta will release A2 with 8 megapixels (whether we'll like the noise or not), Fuji may also improve their SuperCCD sensor to higher resolution.
now
i know megapixels are not the be all and end all, esp on a small

The D70 appears better than D100, in fact. I guess Nikon may want to update their D100 using F100 body.

What is true liberty, I ask you.

Is it the right of any individual to do anything they wish, trespassing on the liberty of other people, or is it the right of any individual to be sure his liberty shan't be trespassed upon? I assure you, this is the true meaning of true liberty.
What is free speech, then?

Depends on how fast will D70's price drop. It's overbloated now, and I guess it should drop to $1,000 for the body+lens kit in a matter of weeks. Still - the D70 is a very capable competitor to both 10D and 300D.
But to call Nikon a leader? Hardly

Their prosumer line is considered worse than Fuji, Minolta and Sony (in alphabetical order), the 8700 does not change anything. It's bound to have the problems of 828 (regarding high noise), and the 8700's slow lens will only augment the problem. Fuji may do something nice by announcing a higher resolution follow-up to their S7000. And Minolta, if even only accomodating the 828's sensor will still compete with Sony (despite the 1 to 1/2 stop slower lens) thanks to AS - if we rate it at 1.5 stop, it means that, at telephoto, Minolta users will have a one stop advantage. Sorry, but Nikon is just at sidelines here.

As for dSLRs... D2H is better than Canon 1D. Now that 1D Mk 2 is coming, it's going to blow D2H out of the water, and that's not just wishful thinking.

D70 - Canon 300D is still going to rule supreme for some time yet, until the Nikon is out, and even then will Nikon have to reduce the price to match Canon's offering (I believe it will go down as far as $700 for the kit at MSRP).

D2X - when it comes out, Canon will have 1Ds replacement. Fuji will probably have S3. Kodak may have DCS-14n replacement. Kodak have left the MF back market, and their 38x38 back is vastly superior to 1Ds sensor, although its resolution is "only" 10.67 megapixels, so on par with Canon 1Ds, but the quality is superior. But Kodak are not behind in R&D, so if Canon releases a 22 megapixel follow-up to the 1Ds, Kodak will do that as well in a Nikon body (this will warrant using F5 as reference body), and perhaps using full frame transfer instead of interline transfer meaning it will have higher quality. Nikon can have problems here as well, especially if their D2X is below 10 megapixels - as far as the megapixel race goes, these are full frame sensors which are not plagued by noise as much as smaller ones are.

When Nikon introduces a follow-up to the D100, Canon will have 10D updated.

Nikon seems to be lagging behind in every segment.

Then, there's Pentax and Minolta. They will both have new SLRs this year, and they will compete with Nikon quality.

And there are sales. Canon sells most cameras in all dSLR segments. Period.

From someone not shooting Nikon or Canon. It is obvious who the leader is whether you like it or not.

What Nikon needs is a Foveon-based camera. My Nikon lenses are in storage just in case
