8700 and D70 announcements

and Canon doesn't piddle on Nikon's parade with a drastic price cut on the 10D, I'll be gettin' me a D70. Anyone want to buy a real cherry 4500? I'm gonna need some serious lens money.

Specs look great. Just imagine what the D200 or whatever they are going to call it will look like (CAM-1300 AF I bet). I would guess that we will see that camera in September at Photokina eh? The D70 certainly appears to be more than enough camera for me.

It seems that nobody is getting excited with the 8700... I certainly don't. I was expecting something more following the A1 line, not just a 5700 with 8Mp (same problems as 828?) and AF assist lamp.

But this is good news; I will not be tempted to sell my 5700 to buy the new toy....

Probably CK is right. Nikon is conentrating the efforts on the DSLR line, where it is certainly a (the ?) main contender and doing minor changes in the prosumer line.

Should I ever decide to move to DSLR, the D70 seems the way to go, now.

And I can't wait to read the test of the Panasonic LC1..... a Leica with just a Panasonic label and hopefully a Panasonic price tag.........

You may very well be right, it's an interseting situation. One that all camera makers would like to know for sure.

If you ask people what they would love to have, then give them something close with other bells and stuff. They are happy. I have seen it again and again. It's a tough world to figure out.

People are snapping up the 8, 10, 12 x zoom cameras, knowing that the 3mp is there because the lens does not deserve a larger sensor.
We will see, I think you ARE close.
I Forgot to mention all the people that want total performance in
the tiny 5700 package (not to mention P&S capabilitys). Chang was
saying something about dropping Prosumer digitals like the
5700/8700/ 828/ A1... I don't thing it's anytime soon. Too many
people want that tiny camera and 6, 7 or 8x zoom. They don't care
about tottal control and endless interchangable lenses.
I think Prosumer Digitals are here to stay for longer than many of
us think.
Well, maybe it is so soon. But, the hottest high-end consumer
digcam may not be a Nikon. Don't you think a Panasonic FZ-10 with
a monster Leica 15X zoom is more tempting? Many people do. Some
people prefer the ergonomic, fast AF and anti-shake features of
the A1. So, if Nikon cannot compete in this segment, they might
just withdraw and only present something, just something for this
segment. This looks like what they are doing.

The D70 looks like a real winner-
i can hear my wife and conscience
now saying ' ...not another camera,
please stop the insanity....' :)
I plan to tell my wife the following tomorrow morning: honey, since
your N80 is getting old and out-dated and out-classed, why don't
you buy a D70 and share my D100 and F5 lenses and I will carry the
lenses for you? This may work. He he hehe.

You are lucky if you get 12 bits of good data out of these size of sensors, let alone 14.

The extra 2 bits are just marketing hype and will not impact image quality - they should read 'up to 14 bit'

Sorry, but I disagree.

There is plenty of room in the market for a good compact camera. There will never be a 35-280 equiv lens of decent quality for the D70. To get that range with that quality lenses you'll have to pay many times the price of the 8700, 828 or A1.

Just think how many film ZLRs Olympus sold in the 90's. Film SLRs were well established by then, as were P&S. There is definitely a place for what's in between. Travelling with multiple lenses in a huge inconvenience that many people will not tolerate.
That was my impression also- D70 looks impressive, the 8700 will
just be noisier 5700.

Comparing the two cameras points to the future of digital cameras-
the days of the 8700s and 828s are numbered, since you can now get
the "real thing" for almost the same price. But we could have
predicted that from the start by looking at the film camera world.
You have nice SLRs, cheap point and shoots, and little in between.

I think maybe now is a great time to get a 5700 while it's still available!

Now that we have a camera similar to the 5700 but WITH AF assist lamp, we may finally be able to figure out if this feature REALLY makes a difference!

At least for a while. This coming from the same Nikon manager that told me about today's announcements. Also, a supplier of mine just recieved a large shipment of CP5700's. They will be around and probably at lower price.

The AF assist light that Canon has on their A70 / A80 cameras is a joke. A check in the box but not very functional unless you are within a few feet of the subject.
