I am printing the targets to get a custom profile from Cathy's Profiles for Epson Premium Luster paper on my Epson 1280. Her instructions say to select the correct media type. However, my driver (recently updated version 5.21P) only lists "Heavyweight Matte", "Photo Paper", "Premium Glossy Photo Paper", and "Glossy Photo Paper".

Does anyone know which one I should select, or why my driver does not list more options?

thanks

Go the Epson's site and select the 1280, then download the file which has the "Colorlife Photo Paper" profile and use it. It's not perfect, but the only one that comes close...
Cheers,

Dave, the only difference in the paper settings is the amount of ink dumped on the paper. A gloss paper absorbs ink more slowly than a matte and thus you dont want pooling of the ink so a setting for gloss will dump less ink on the paper.

You also have a setting for Glossy Film in that driver which I use for the Ilford Pearl paper. You also have a setting for Colorlife Paper with needs very little ink on the paper--very slow absorption.

I have the 1280 also, but pretty much stick to the Ilford Galerie Pearl--same as colorlife--, but a couple of pictures I have seen on Lustre--printed with the 2200--looked like it was almost a gloss, so I would guessI would try a gloss paper or gloss film setting. As long as your ink does not pool or look wet, you should be OK with the target file. Just remember that when the profile is made you want to keep on using the same setting for your prints.

However, having said all that, I bet Cathy would give you a quick answer by email.

When the 1280 was released the luster paper wasn't out, it came later and so is not listed. However, early batches of Luster came with instructions for the 1280 printer. If I recall correctly , both it and the Semigloss papers required the Premium Glossy Photo setting if you have no listing for either paper. Anyway, regardless of that, if you use the Premium Glossy Photo Paper setting, you will get nearly identical results on all three papers. In fact if you had a Premium Semigloss setting and used that for all three you would get nearly identical results again, and one further, if you had a Luster setting the results would also be nearly identical on all three papers ! I know this from selecting the wrong paper types from time to time with my 2200.

Colorlife is in another league, it has it's own color response, way different from the papers you are using and it's also a swellable polymer paper, so has different ink soak. The instructions for Color Life for use with early 1280s which didn't list this paper, included color correction instructions not required for the other papers. You don't want that selection.
