Pat has been trying for weeks to register to get in here with us to no avail. The STF says that they have been banned from many servers (ours is one) and so we cannot get a PASSWORD. It says to use another ISP server but we don't have one. Pat wrote here and talked to our server and so far we just can't get her ON.

Perhaps direct feedback to Phil would help. I assume that she can browse the forums, just being unable to register because of the ISP. If so, perhaps she could send a feedback message with her email addy and explain the situation. As an alternative, she could use yahoo or one of the other email services for purposes of registering. For instance, I have a web site that gives me several email addys, if I want to use them. If you have a web site other than with your ISP, that's another alternative.

I had the same problem about six months ago (I have AOL) when I lost my password. I wasn't able to receive the password or any response from Phil that he might have written when I complained several times to him. Finally I reregistered through another e-mail service that I had at the time (mac.com) and got a new password, then switched everything back to my real address.

I can't remember, but doesn't it say somewhere that you can't use any of the free mail services to register (hotmail.com or yahoo)? I could be wrong here, but that sticks in my mind.

Anyway, it was a frustrating experience; I had to have a friend start a thread for me explaining my predicament and ask for solutions.

Go to Mail > Mail & Spam Controls, and select the first option "Control Who I Get Mail From" > Allow Mail from All Senders (be sure to be signed on as the account you're signing up with)

I believe it's not an automatic reject anymore, but it is recognized as spam and sent to the trash if you don't have this option selected.

Oh, and it takes upwards of 8 hours to get the password back -- be patient!

It appears that the problem is email blocking. Are you able to go to a web page on your ISP that allows you to set up spam blocking for your account? If so, you might be able to adjust the filters to allow her to receive the password email from Phil's email server.

For instance, I had Prodigy that had such a web page that allowed me to block lots of different stuff, like Overseas originator, etc. It also allowed me to put in a specific address to be accepted, in spite of the filter blocks. I assume that your ISP and Yahoo employ similar blocking filters and you should be able to change at least one of them. Here's the relevant info from Phil's registration page.

Please ensure that your ISP / personal SPAM blocking software allows emails from '[email protected]' and that you are not blocking our mail server (198.64.152.161).

My Yahoo mail account says that they send questionable emails to the bulk mail folder. You can turn Off Spamguard. It also says that you can change/delete filters in the Mail Options page. If the password email was sent to the Yahoo bulk mail folder, you should also be able to retrieve it there, within 30 days.

But, one of the problems she might be having is that she registered here, with a certain user name and associated password. Now, she can't register again, using the same information, because it's linked to an account that she can't access. So, it's a catch22 situation.

What she probably needs to do is create a new email account on Yahoo, or somewhere, making sure that all spam filters are turned off. Register here, using a new user name and then wait for the password to arrive. As an alternative, you could have someone use one of their email accounts to set up the registration here for her, which would allow her to access it and change the password.

If I understood the registration page, it says that AOL and Hotmail have smam filters that block a lot of emails, including Phil's email server. I'm guessing that Yahoo is similar. But, those spam filters can usually be edited or disabled.

Yes I got your email and thank you!

The bit about the NOT being able to register is NOT a computer problem it is OUR server and this site has a LIST of other servers that BLOCK the email from this site. There is nothing WE can do about it as I called. This site has to call and this site says it did many times. So you have to get another SERVER to get the email from this site to get your password lol. It's all UNREAL. We tried the free server you gave us so far no email but I will let you know as soon as we get it.
Thank you again, you are all so wonderful, I just love you all! :) Cherylm

Wish I understood how to disable them! My preference settings on AOL say that I should receive "everything," but there are still things AOL rejects (that I know about, who knows what I'm missing) such as e-mails from my insurance broker in the States. For a while even my employer in Okinawa was being blocked, and AOL wouldn't let me write to them either. When I tried to write to Steve Case, it was blocked from his e-mail. Yet I still continue to receive some SPAM messages.

It's really very frustrating.

I'm sure that it is. Wish I could help, but I have never used AOL, so haven't much of clue about how it works in that area. AFAIK, there are settings both on the software on your machine and at their server. Dunno how helpful it would be to ask their customer service dept. about the problem.

Have you tried using a Yahoo or similar free email account for those kinds of things that have proven to be a problem with AOL?

I am on AOL also and just received my new password. In AOL go to "Mail Controls" and make sure there is NOT a check mark in any of the boxes on the right and side that is marked "Mail filtered by .........." I just did that a few minutes ago and then registered and received my password in under 10 minutes !!!!!
Good Luck

Yes, I spent several days going back and forth with their customer service; got several (actually, three) different stories as to why I couldn't receive or send to my Okinawan employer and what could be done about it (nothing). Then the day that some injunction against AOL was announced in Texas, I started receiving mail from Okinawa again. Very interesting, I thought.

As a result of all this, the Okinawans set up an account for me using their server. So now I at least have a backup that has actually come in quite handy recently.

I went to the Mail Controls dialog box but don't see any boxes on the right or anything marked "mail filtered by..." Where is this?

Maybe we have different versions of AOL. I am version 8 and when I click on Mail Controls i get a windwo called Mailed and Spam Control where the check boxes for controlling spam are on the right window side. Check your version of AOL.
