Hi fellow 10Ders,

I ordered a "new" 10D from circuitcity.com in late December '03 and received it just before Christmas.

It strikes me as odd that the firmware on this unit is not what one would expect it to be for a camera ordered around that time.

Firmware: 1.0.1
Serial Number: 102030xxxx

Any thoughts as to how or why that may have come to be ?

Thanks.

PS: Long time lurker, first time poster. I have learnt much from this forum, including info to make the decision to go with the 10D. The camera, my first SLR/DSLR, works great from what I can tell. The time, energy and enthusiasm of the many wonderful people on here who make it a great community are much appreciated. Keep up the good work (and play)!

So why is it so strange?

Got mine Direct from Canon in November. Same SN and firmware as you note. Not sure what's odd about it....

I bought my 10D at the same time from CircuitCity. Its serial # is 09203.... and it had 1.0.1 on it. I don't think the serial # reflects the manf. date as mine would have been made in 9/02.

Per following site, release date for 2.0.0 was Oct 30, 2003 and June 26, 2003 for 1.0.1.

I believe (some/many of the ?) 10Ds shipping Nov and Dec '03 came with 2.0.0, and was expecting to see that version when I got mine.

Thanks for the info.

from doing a search on serial number in this forum.

Wonder if the serial number is just that, a serial/sequential number starting at some base number for the first production unit, or there is some info embedded in there.
Thanks for the input.

I'm sure several retailers received their last shipment of bodies before the firmware update.

Doesn't seem odd to me at all.
Thanks for the info.

(See profile for equipment I own -- questions welcome.)

Usually the first two digits indicate the month of manufacture. I bought my first 10D in May and it had a 0420xxxxxx serial and my second 10D in September with a 0720xxxxxx serial number. The third digit and possably the forth may indicate the factory code, although I have only seen a 20 followed by a unique sequence number. No big deal, there hasn't been any manufacturing changes other than firmware which is upgradeable. It seems a lot of focus issues were reported with 0220xxxxxx and 0320xxxxxx units but that may mean they had new people working on the assembly line since all with that number were not bad.

When starting the thread, I mistakenly assumed 2.0.0 was released earlier than it actually was and that there were additional firmware releases between 1.0.1 and 2.0.0.

After reading recent articles here about some stores possibly selling returned equipment as new, I turned to this forum to check whether "older" firmware on a recently purchased 10D may indicate any such issues.

Did do some research prior to posting, but the replies to my post revealed what the searches did not. It doesn't appear to be that odd after all, given the additional information.

Thanks.
