G5 Lightning Pics

I used a tripod, iso 50, manual focus set to infinity and set the shutter speed to anywhere between 5 and 15 seconds and experimented.

The best time for getting the actual shots was when the storm was brewing and 1st hitting as the lightning and thunder was continuous. I picked a point where there was lots of activity, then just clicked and waited.

If there was a lightning flash during the initial waiting period there is a good chance u got it. In the review if I had nothing I merely deleted the pic and clicked again. It is more of a waiting game than skill I think to take lightning pics - and luck!

Jadzia
what iso were you using? What was your shutter speed? How did you
time the shots. Did you just leave your finger on the trigger and
hope that lighting would strike?
Had a beauty of a storm last night and spent all evening happily
practising lightning pictures.

I haven't had much luck with fireworks but will try doing it this way - hopefully the weather will be clear for our Australia Day celebrations monday and I can get some in then!

Wow they are impressive. I should have gone for a drive to get pics without all the wires, houses, trees (kids) etc but I couldn't be bothered lol.

Jadzia
Pretty good for 1 night. I am still waiting on the storms to
return to TX so I can stay up till 3AM again in hopes of getting 1
decent picture.

I have a few I shot in here.

I think I may stick with shooting the storm clouds. Heck of alot
easier than hunting down the elusive lightning shots. :^)

Thanks Dorys,

we get a few at this time of year - really thru spring to autumn. Normally the rain is so heavy you can't get anything but these flashed for a long time before the rain hit and even then it wasn't heavy. I was under my verandah at the front of the house and it was more a case of luck that the wind etc was in the right direction (so I don't get my precious wet hehe) than anything else.

Jadzia
These came out great Jadzia.

Unfortunately, we don't get many lightning storms in San Diego so I
love to see other's pics.

Heh, my shots are thru a window as I am to worried about getting struck. :^) I am waiting for that perfect afternoon storm which has a clearly defined front that I know I won;t get struck. Hopefully this will occur before all the open fields around me disappear AND I have my camera with me.

Don't give up the hunt and congrats on the G5.
