Got my FZ10! WOW! Super impressed - first photos!

I will review your images ... another trick I learned recently (to reduce jitter) ... if you do not have a tripod ... steady yourself (like u did) .. and take several pictures in burst mode. The one with the largest JPEG size is the best one (least blur).

As far as pressing shutter when using tripod .. the FZ10 has a 2 sec timer ... use that instead of a remote switch etc. :-)

Thanks

I agree. I had the pleasure of a press pass to the last NFL Atlanta Falcons game this year with a semi-pro who owns the Nikon D100 with a F2.8 300mm lens ($3K just for the lens).... yes it blew away the FZ10, but he took many pictures that were also not sharp that he deleted.

Accurate focusing systems are apparently expensive. He told me Nikon just released a new DSLR (N2H) that is only 4MP and cost over $3K. I said that doesn't make sense; why would anybody pay that kind of money over the D100 at $1.2K? He said it has what press photographers need...a superior foucsing system, not to mention 8 frames/sec burst mode.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond2h/page25.asp

I find the focusing system on the FZ10 very good for this price range.

Take heart!

Can you post the last few
digits of your serial number and manuf date ?
Camera 02106 Do not see any manuf date.
I would also appreciate a few links to the originals ... so I can
do an apples to apples comparison with mine (see my link below).
The first 5 photos on http://www.pbase.com/fotoman/fz10day1&page=all
were cropped slightly to remove distracting objects. That's from
"Headless Ducks" through "Grazing". All the rest are full-size
originals right out of the camera.
If you are not familiar with pbase, just click on any photo to get
started, then scroll down and click on "Original". This will
display the picture I uploaded. Then click on "full exif" and
scroll down to see the EXIF data.
All the pictures will show EXIF data, including the ones I cropped.
Cropping was minimal. If you want to see the actual size of any of
the pictures that were cropped, just right-click on the picture and
select "Properties".
Let me know if you have any questions about this.
I looked at your pictures and thought they were fine. Maybe you are
just being too self-critical!

Hi Gus,

Thanks for sharing your pics with us. They are very nice indeed. May I ask , how do you compare the pic quality of the FZ10 with the G3?? Also does the FZ10 comes with it's own wireless remote control?? I also have the G3 and wants the FZ10 too! Thanks!

As far as comparing the FZ10 with Canon G3 I just have not had enough experience with the FZ10 yet. I plan to take them both out and about in the near future and will take the same photos with both cameras and compare apples to apples.

No, the FZ10 does NOT come with a remote. It is NOT available at all. I wish it were.

You're to kind. I know it's not good and would like to learn how to get good photo's with this camera. I have 2 35mm set-ups that I always got good photo's with, a Minolta Maxum 7xi and a Nikon 8008. I'm a bit lost with this digital. I've just joined the Eagle Watch program and hope to be able to get lots more Eagle shots. Can you help me learn this camera? Do you think it could have anything to do with manufacture date or is it me?

Thanks for any help.
p.s. how can I track this msg?
I have several on my computer and don't know how to show them to
you without re-sizing. Can you tell me how to do that?

Thank you Lorna.

Have just learned a few more tricks to get sharp photo's with this camera. I'm way past the age of consent, and am now a bit 'shaky', so I'm about to start more test photo's using a tripod and different settings. This is a fabulous camera and I can't wait to get out there taking more pics. Mostly interested in nature and wildlife.

Hope you get yours soon. Can't you order from here instead of waiting till it's available there?
Amazing zoom - beautifully sharp. It's good to see positive
comments and good images. I was getting cold feet about this camera
after some of the comments I've seen. But thanks to your shots Gus
and Judith you've made up my mind - just have to wait for its
release here in Australia.

Brother is in states now but panasonic advised against it - no warranty, need adaptor for recharging - different voltage and possibly no support if purchased in states - so in the end I decided against doing this. I'm also mostly interested in wildlife and thankfully still have a steady hand - need it for painting too.

Lorna:

With your brohter in the States I think you kick yourself later for not having him pick you up an FZ10 while he's there. That recharger business is nonsense ... all these chagers, including the one that came with my FZ1, are all voltage and frequency universal ... it'll run on anything from 120vac / 60 Hz that is the power grid standard here in N America to the 220vac / 50 Hz system you have Down Under. My wife is from Wollongong and anytime we been back home to Oz we don't give a moment's thought to taking along any camera chargers, etc that we may have ... you just need an adapter to match your outlets, that's all.

As for the warranty, I'm not sure what it's worth, truthfully. Panasonic Canada has just introduced the FZ2 here in Canada so rather than upgrade my FZ1 with the online version of software than can make it an FZ2 I'm exchanging it for an FZ2 because I can't get a clear answer from anyone, including the retailer I bought my FZ1 from, whether doing the upgrade myself would or would not affect my warranty. However, I think I'm in the minority ... judging from what I've read here on this forum I think most FZ1 owners haven't given it another thought, and if the warranty is voided, so be it! That's gotta tell you they have a lot of faith in this series of camera, and to tell you the truth, in the time I've been following this forum I can't think of anyone saying their camera suddenly suffered a catastrophic failure. In addition, when I read the fine print on my Canadian warranty it says 1 year for parts, only 90 days for labour, and I have to pay any freight ... not much of a warranty when you think about it.

Here in Canada the prices for cameras are just as ridiculous as they are in Oz. Here the FZ10 lists for $1100 Cdn, sells for $1000 retail, but in the States the everyday retail price is just $600 US, with many reporting even here on this forum prices as low as $475 US! Those prices, even when converted to AUS or CAN $$$$, are still far lower than what we're stuck with. Bottom line ... I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to get that FZ10 you want while your brother is still in the States!

Hi Lorna,

I perked up on your interest in wildlife. Do you have any photos from another camera of your wildlife shots? I'd love to see some Australian wildlife!
Regarding painting - what do you paint? Any samples?
Cheers from Texas!

Hi Gus,

I don't have any scanned at moment but a great site is birdphotos.com.au and also birdway.com.au.

You guessed it - I want to specialise in painting birds - only done a few so far of kingfishers and have just started some rainbow bee-eaters.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi Lorna,

I live in South Africa and bought my FZ10 thru B&H Cameras, and had it expressed here. Our voltages and plugs are similar to yours, and I can confirm, there are no issues with voltage (I have taken 900+ pictures so far)

I would not be overly concerned about warranty as well, ask your brother to buy it and take a few shots if you want to confirm that its working (the shop will willingly do this for you if you want). There was a post a while ago about someone who dropped his FZ10 with no damage, beleive its quite rugged as opposed to a lot of the jewel like minutures.

I paid $200 extra to get it here and pay customs. You have the oppurtunity to avoid this, so I would really recommend plunging in and buying it right Now Before He Leaves!

BTW Ihave bought 3 digital cameras in the States over the last 4 years, and I have never had a failure.

Regards

Mark

Out of intrest here is a picture of Southern Red Bishops in my garden shot at about 15 metres on a cloudy day with full zoom. I have cropped and resized it.

Lorna:

As mentioned, the battery is charged out of the camera on a stand alone charger, and those chargers that are sold here in North America will have a our standard 120vac plug on the end of it ... it's what we call a polarized plug ... each pin is flat but one (the neutral) is slightly wider than the other so it can only be plugged in one way. Our other standard plug is essentially the same but has a separate ground connector on it but this power supply doesn't have it, just the two pronged polarized plug, so what you'll need to use this charger in Oz is a simple adapter into which you'd plug the end of the power supply connector and the adapter you'd plug into your 220vac wall outlet. You can buy these adapters anywhere travel supplies such as luggage, etc are sold.

Thanks for the kind words on the picture... the plug is not an issue as the chord that connects the plug to the charger is a female 2 pin socket that is used generically for connecting radios, TV's and other electrical goods.

I bought one with a local plug on the other end for about 5 bucks at an aplliance repair shop.

Good Luck with your Brother....
