Zoo Atlanta - Lots of FUN - images

Did anybody go to the Atlanta Zoo today? (Saturday, Jan 17)

Gray and cold in Loganville and started drizzling about noon so I didn't get there. Looking forward to a more agreeable outdoor environment to try again.

Well, who braved the elements?

Gary,

Three of us braved the weather, wasn't too bad, great to meet wterry and GrizzlyHackle. The skies were overcast all day, with lite sprinkles of rain here and there. The lighting was very even, the animals were few and the crowds even less. For me the Lion and Pandas were my focal point, here are some with the Simga 100-300 f/4.

Nice! Cloudy wx can really contribute to some nice even lighting with great detail and saturated colors. Now I wish I had gotten an early start and done the trip.

By the time I would have driven in from Loganville I figured it would be raining too much to be out. So much for my planning...

Well, where is the group photo?

Gary C.,

Happy to see your picture with Rollcast.
Thanks for obliging with my request.
Now how about a picture of Kate? :-)

Cheers,
Jimmy
My wife Kate had her P&S and shot Rollcast and me. Not a great
shot, but it proves we were there anyway. Rollcast (Gary) on gthe
left and Gary Coombs (with the 70-200 2.8L IS + 2xII) on the right.

Well I know my pictures aren't as good as yours, but here are a few shots anyways. I promise to practice and get better!

I like all of them. Very candid poses of the flamingos. We should go again. Practice makes perfect. Next time around I'll have to buy a yearly pass.
Hey guys, I want to thank both of you for all the pointers. Since I
am just starting out with this, I hope everyone likes my 3 photos.
Learning how to use the camera is hard enough, trying to figure out
Photoshop CS is a bear. Let me know what you think.

You need to be a member!! I went back today for just a couple of
hours, see if you think it was worth the trip.
Yes, indeed, well worth the trip. Where did you shoot him? Hopefully in the aviary where you don't have to contend with cage wires.

And that did it, I'm after birds on my next trip with my 70-200 2.8L IS.

Gary,

With the overcast skies I went back to get more Panda images, just my luck they were inside. So I start to stroll over to the Lions and to my wonder there were three zoo keepers out with birds. I start to shoot the Owl (Quincy), a Red Tail Hawk and another. After about 20 images the handlers arms were getting tired, I can relate to holding 4-6 pounds. Well I arrive to find the Lion sound asleep, so I shoot a few Rhino shots. Start making my way back to the Pandas and find a handler with an Eagle! I'll post a few more when I have the time, a GREAT day to say the least.
