Canon Rep at MacWorld hints about what is on the way

Several of us at MacWorld really put the questions to the Canon digital camera rep at MacWorld and the surprise to me at least was that he hinted strongly that Canon has improved the Raw image converter software. What started the discussion about software was a question I put to him regarding banding - I said that I hoped the new 1D replacement had less banding. He claimed at first that the RIC was the only software that did the conversion correctly - generally knocked poor Thomas Knoll around and said he made the software in a day. My response to that was that if one guy could make a better software in a day then there was no excuse for Canon's offering. He then said be patient it is coming and it will be good. I said I've had my 1d for nearly two years...and his response was the wait will be very short.

One thing to be sure of, is that Canon is a little cocky (mostly because they can be) about how good their camera equipment is. I worked one of their shows before, demo'ing printers, and found them to be pretty quick to knock any competing products.

read S-L-O-W.... very S-L-O-W... :p

Hope they do fix it... I only use it when I want to find out what's the E-TTL FEC on my raw files.

Yeah even the Canon guy admitted the interface sucked but he still thought it yielded the best image.

There's a gigantic gap between their printing people and their camera people though. The canon reps at the printer station didn't know beans. I mean they didn't know the difference between pigment and dye inks or what made paper archival. There were three of them asking each other what pigment meant. At least the camera guys could talk intelligently with the customers.

That's par for the course for just about ALL vendors at ANY convetion, MacWorld, AES, NAB, CES, WPPI, Photokina, auto shows, dishwasher shows, electric nose hair trimmer shows, etc. The booths are staffed by salespeople whos job it is to sell the products they represent. Pointing out your advantages and putting down competitors is pretty standard. Some behavior can be questionable (and actually bad for sales, especially if you end up insulting the intelligence of a potential customer) but none of it is surprising.

Cheers, Joe

Hahaha, that's a great response !! I can't stop laughing.
The Canon converter is really a shame.

I Missed ANOTHER nose-hair trimmer show?

I work for Canon as a rep for the printer division, and we are specifically instructed (and regularly reminded) not to include any negative opinions of competing products when we are selling our own.

Canon IS cocky but they have the history to prove it - they took a chance alienating the manual camera users by not (ala Nikon) worrying about backwards compatibility in designing their AF cameras years ago. In this wey they built their version of the ideal AF camera. They came up with the 1Ds and charge over $7,000 for it. Well above Kodak's piece of poo poo even though it's about 3 mp lower in resolution (than Kodak's). Why? Because they make goooooood ShiiiiiitE! If you can walk the walk - then you're allowed to talk the talk!

LOL

FWIW, the changes in actual resolution as you go up in MP drop off significant. There isn't that huge of a difference between a 5mp and a 6mp camera, and there is probably even less difference between an 11 and 14 mp camera.

That, and the booth babes.

Don't anthropomorphize digital cameras. They don't like it.
