Looks like Farrukh and PowerPet have stimulated a renaissance in B&W photography, aided by the fact that digital makes it so much easier (and less smelly :), so i'm re-posting something someone posted before and I downloaded: Photoshop levels that supposedly simulate Tri-X Pan film.

If you want them they're in here:
http://briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/dolan_h

I used them to produce the images in this gallery:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=1397796&a=10761884

I have to say, i'm really impressed how much better some images look in black & white. Thanks guys for re-sparking my interest in the area!

I can't get to the PS level setting in your Yahoo briefcase...

Nice shots btw...

Mike.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that they're under "files". They should be zipped.

Since I was inspired by Furrukh and Andy Ly I don't want to take any credit.
I really enjoy your album, great images! :-)

I downloaded those Photoshop levels you spoke about. I could only load the tri-x.ACV in the Curves, but the other file (Tri-X.AHU) I couldn't figure out where it did belong). It wasn't in the Levels. Any idea??

Never mind, I saw now it's for the HUE settings... so it's Curves and Hue/Saturation settings it should be loaded in. :-)

Thanks for the link!!

Sorry, I should have mentioned what the component pieces were for - I think the order for using it is this:

1) hue/saturation
2) levels
3) convert to grayscale

However, I might be wrong. Experiment and tell me which works for you!

These are wonerful pictures, Dolan. Thanks for sharing them. The barber shop is a classic. I have one of the SilverOxide filters (Delta 100) but will have to give your download a try.

Thanks again,
Ron

There is another neat method that I swear I learned from Michael H. Reichmann's website, The Luminous-Landscape, but I can't find now. This technique was much more powerful than just desaturating an image.

The technique described was to use Image~Adjust~Channel Mixer.
Check the monochrome box in the lower right hand corner.
Experiment with the three channels to get the correct effect.

I liked his example better but here is an example of an effect I was able to create using this method.

Here is the original image.

I haven't played with this enough, but I imagine you might be able to set up some conversions and then use them on multiple images.

Best part is its totally free if you already have Photoshop.

I like fall leaves in black and white.

Olympus E-10 -- a camera i'm really growing to love. Would have bought a D30 (my previous SLR was an EOS-1) but the E-10 was half the cost and does most of what I want to do, plus has some pretty neat tricks up its sleeve.
By the way .. what camera are you using?

Thank you for the compliments! However, those are not my settings --- I simply downloaded them from someone else.

Some of the pictures, like the one i'll include below, needed to be darker and have more contrast, so I added -20 brightness and +25 contrast:
