Dear people:

When the D1 was initially announced, I read of one of its key selling point being that its CCD can be upgraded as obsolescence sets in. In Phil Askey;s review, the reamrk in sopecifications was * not interchangeable. Can someone clarify?..as I am making a decision (to me a big one) by this week.

Thank you.

I interpreted Phil's note to mean that there is no upgrade path for the D1. I would imagine that owners of Nikon's earlier Pro models (E3) are now stuck and are wishing that THEY could upgrade the CCD in THAT camera.

So assume if you buy a D1 that in a year or two a 6 Megapixel camera will come out from Nikon and you will wish that you had bought THAT model.

Jai, there was a rumour printed on September 15, 1999, where Phil Askey said that the D1 was going to be upgradable. If you look at the Nikon D1 preview here in this forum there is an astrick by the CCD stating it is NOT upgradable. So decide now Jai if this camera suits you and your type of shooting because it will never get better. Get prepared to purchase a new camera yearly. This is Nikon's way of becoming a car maker in the camera making bussiness! Wallets and bank accounts get dressed for traveling!

So the answer is never buy anything because there will always be something better down the road.

Yeah, the IBM Thinkpad that I bought early in June is a Pentium II 366 megahertz machine. The newest laptops now have bigger hard drives, bigger screens, and a Pentium III 500. I guess I have been shafted by those folks at IBM! When will I ever learn? Maybe after I get my D1?

Oooo.. That "Sign up for free weekly Newsletter" checkbox is
sneaky Phil.

Anyway:

Alternatively you can buy it, and as soon as you receive it, throw
it in the trash. I've always figured they should just put a big
dumpster outside every computer store so you can trash your new
purchase as you leave the store.

Like anything you have to decide what you need now and
buy appropriately. I've recently sent off a bunch of photos
from the cp950 to be printed for my mom (I publish to the web
almost exclusively), and they look fantastic at 4x6
great at 5x7 and pretty damn good at 8x10. I don't and never
will regret the purchase of this camera. Even if I chose to
replace it in 6 months, it would still have performed the
job that I bought it for. Given its capabilities it should
always retain some value. Ask yourself what you really need
instead of what you'd like to have 3 years from now.

Darn! I wish they would stop improving these things. Life was much easier with the Kodak Brownie.

Gosh folks...

I didn't say "Don't buy a D1" ... I said that you should be PREPARED to wish that you COULD buy every new model with bigger and bigger CCDs. The original question was "D1 Upgradeable CCD ??????????"....

The short answer is "NO" -- not upgradeable as per Phil Askey's review. Buy it...or NOT...I don't care. It just ain't upgradable, and at some point not too far off, the D-1 owner will wish that it was. Did you see the posting here about the E3, that began "I know this camera is a dinasaur...?" Well..that's who I was thinking of when I ANSWERED THE QUESTION !

As discussed...

If you can/want to answer Christian's question go to the "other" forum!

---------From "Pro Camera Forum"
Hello,

Firstly no one neads to tell me the E3 is now a dinosaur, I'm very aware of that. Never the less if any E3 owners read this I have 2 questions.

1. Can you really use wide angle lenses on this camera? I've read that the E2 didn't allow anything less than 28mm or so.

2. Is there any way to get around the 1/2 sec. min shutter speed. I'm aware that noise would begin to become an issue, however noise can be repaired (some what) and I love playing with long shutter rear curtain effects, like painting with different collored flash lights and then freezing the artist.

If anyone can help, thanks a lot.
