I am checking out digital cameras. I was surprised at how toy-like the G1 felt when compared to the 990. It seems to have a plastic feel to it. Will all those plastic dials and knobs hold up with normal use? --Reed

With all due respect, is this a joke? The G1 is one of the more solid-feeling cameras in the under-$1000 class. There are certainly some chintzier plastic elements to it (but very minor compared to most of the other cameras), and the 990 is equally gadget and toy-like in its construction. If you think the G1 is bad, go to a Micro Center or Ritz Camera and check out all the other digicams, then see how you feel about the G1.

The answer to your question is: yes, the dials and knobs hold up quite well. 3000 shots and counting...

This is quite obviously another troll entry attempting to get a rise out of genuine G1 owners here. Every review of the G1 mentions just how sturdy the camera is and how metallic.

Mmmm best to let this thread die, I think.

Pretty amusing considering that at one point the rate of defects out of box for the 990 was in excess of 1 out of 3. (ref. Norman Camera November of this year). That sure steered me in the G1 direction and I haven't looked back. IF anything it is a little tank! I guess I must have smaller hands as I have NO problem holding the camera or finding a good grip. I also use the semihard case and find that greatly enhances the grip on the move.

I'll use my own definition of "normal use" -- daily use. I have a handful of Canon SLRs from the 70's and 80's that still see regular use. People said I was crazy at the time to switch from the metal Nikon F2 to the plastic Canon A-1, but the weight and feel were good to me, and I've been happy ever since. I did pick up a metal Canon F-1, another tank like the Nikon (almost soviet-feeling by comparison to the "A" cameras), but the plastic bodies just keep chugging along -- my daughter recently inherited an AE-1 Program, plastic dials and buttons & all -- 20 years old and functioning flawlessly.

hi, may i ask what you mean by the semihard case? i've currently purchased a G1 and felt that it lacked the grip (as compared to my friends coolpix 950). would appreciate if there's someway to get a better grip with it. thanks in advance.

I think anyone who has tried the semi-hard case has loved it! I got mine when I purchased my G1 and it truly does help when taking pictures and is nice to look at and feel. My kids look like professionals when they take pictures, so I guess I must not look too bad using it too. The adjustable strap helps you hold the camera still at anywhere from waist-high or higher while taking shots and the small pocket on the inside is perfect for your remote and (1) cf card.

The only draw backs on it I can think of is (1) you have to take it off to mount the camera on a tripod or to exchange cf cards (not a problem for you lucky microdrive owners :(, and (2) the metalic canon label on the front of mine was scratched up when I inadvertently set in on some car keys in my truck. Bummer.

To Scissrhnd: Take a look at these photos (I have posted them in another thread to show how to store remote control or CF card.)

About the G1 quality I can say that it's pretty good, apart from the fact that the lens barrel is a little bit shaky.

The inner part of the lens doesn't move at all, but the outside with the last lens (I'm not a technician, hope you can understand me) really moves. A millimeter or so each side, I'd say.
Is that normal or is it only my camera ?

My lense is a little shakey too, but I haven't noticed any effects in my pics. I have enjoyed the camera greatly! :)

Sure, Canon makes a "SemiHard" case for travel purposes. It has a snap/removable top for complete access to the necessary controls and the LCD, while also having a full neck strap so you can carry the camera protected like your typical 35mm camera. You can not leave any lens extension tubes attached while closing the case however. I don't use them often enough for it to be a problem. You can get one from http://www.normancamera.com as an example.

Hmmm... I might be the only one who doesn't love it! I sold mine shortly after getting it. Although the case is very well made, I found it too limiting. I find myself removing and replacing the CF card too often for the case to be useful - especially since you have to unscrew it from the tripod hold every time. That, too, was a problem for me because I use the tripod quite often - randomly - and it's just too cumbersome to remove the case and then put it back on each time. Also, you can't even use the AV output to view your pictures on TV without removing the case.

Don't get me wrong... for those that don't have (or aren't bothered by) these limitations, the case is perfect! It just wasn't for me, and I might be the only one???

Hello Hello:

A couple of posts have lamented the inability to mount the G1 to a tripod without removing the camera from the semi-hard case. I found (with the suggestion of another poster on this site) a way around that.

I bought ($8.00) an old metal knob from a used camera dealer on the web (Bill Green" ) that has screw holes for a tripod. I had to remove the original plastic knob from the semi-hard case, and expand the hole in the semi-hard case a little bit, but it fits firmly, has a better 'feel' than the plastic knob, and has a screw hole in the bottom to allow me to mount it to my tripod while it is still in the semi-hard case. It works great.

Hope this helps.

Nope, I'm the same way. I just carry too much other junk around at all times...polarizer, neutral density filter, extra battery, backup CF card, IR remote, plus wide angle, tele and macro attachments. Not to mention the 550EX and the 80-20 reflector! And I use the G1 on a tripod a LOT. So the hard case doesn't cut it, but that's just me.

Now that you mention grip...
I had a Coolpix 990 for two weeks and now have had a G1 for a similar period.
The Coolpix definitely has a better grip and also a much more balanced one.

This translates in the Coolpix being the easier camera to steady when shooting (or to to prevent it from accidently slipping form you hands) even with one hand.

Also the rotating design of the Coolpix allows for steady shots with two hands while the swiveling G1 screen makes it unsteady to hold but great for shooting from strange angles.
