Someone has just told me over the phone that
Canon has already discontinued 10D because of its AF problem and
this is why a mail order chain does not carry 10D any more.
How reliable is this news (to me) ?

Depends who the person was!

Canon CEO = very reliable
Salesman trying to sell you something else = not very reliable.

Do a search, you'll find this has been discussed, to death...

Is it the same guy who told you swamp land in Florida is a good investment? He called me last week and tried to sell me some Enron stock.

Several people have observed that the 10D is difficult to find.; even stating that some retailers have indicated they don't expect to receive any more 10Ds. This sounds very similiar to what happened to the D60 last year, just prior to annoucement of the 10D.

It amazes me how many people are sensitive about the idea of the 10D being replaced. The same thing happend with the D60, remember? What's the problem? It seems the 10D is in fact discontinued and will most likely be replaced in Feb. If, you have a 10D don't worry it's still a good camera.

Canon will release the 10Ds to replace all current 10Ds. The 10Ds' AF will be twice as good as the 10D's AF. Unless you perhaps own two 10Ds in which case you already have the accuracy of a 10Ds so you should keep the 10Ds you have and not upgrade to the 10Ds. OK?

3 days after it was announce back in February of 2003....

Canon decided that with the rapid advance of digital imaging, that they would make enough to make it until the engineers could finish the next new model....and it too will be discontinued 3 days after it is annouced too.

also canon is trying to make all the money they can, because with their great optics, they have been able to detect a huge hunk of Iron the size of the state of Texas on a direct collision course with earth....they want to colonize Mars with the money made from the 10D and 'whatever' D.

well lets see...I think we will go about another 2.3 hours until another person decides to ask, "IS THE 10D DISCONTINUED!!!!"

I think this phrase needs to be ranked right up there with, "THE SKY IS FALLING!"

I think that there is nothing to laugh about in this thread and similar threads. It is caused in the first place by Canon. I remeber when the D60 was announced to be replaced everybody had a big exclamation mark on thier heads. One photo magazine wrote in Bold WHY Replace the D60.

Also remeber that when canon announced that replacement, they shortley after started distributing the new model.

it really don't matter if the camera is or is not discontinued... i was at Wolf Camera last week, and i was checking out some lenses... i have a 10D at home so i asked the salesman if i can test the lens on a 10D they might happen to have on display... then the salesman told me that the 10D is discontinued... he said it in a way like it is now inferior than it was before... and then he went on ahead telling me about how Canon told them not to take anymore orders and blah blah blah... that the camera is discontinued... for cryin' out loud... i wasn't even asking about the damn camera... i just wanted something to test the lens on...

I feel there's nothing disingenuious about your question, although it probably would have been a good idea to do a search or just scan through the recent threads regarding this subject. I've never been a big fan of sarcasm or ridicule, so I'll spare you the aspersions and I'll try to be civil to you as I would expect the same treatment regardless of how trivial the question might seem to others.

The latest second-hand information I've gotten, since I don't know anyone that works for Canon and even if I did, they couldn't/wouldn't tell me, leads me to believe the 10D will either be replaced or upgraded and, most likely, the announcement will be made at next month's PMA. Others here have let it be known, in no uncertain terms, that Canon will not discontinue, replace, or upgrade the 10D. That's fine as they're entitled to their opinions as much as anyone else is. Some feel it's time for Canon to come out with a newer version of the 1D since it's the oldest dSLR in Canon's lineup. Personally, I don't see why they couldn't do both.

The non-sarcastic answer to your actual question is not at all.

The statement is both true - in a sense - and false.

I am guessing the person on the telephone was a person you were trying to buy the 10D from, and they didn't have any? They do have lots of Nikons and maybe some 300Ds or Olympus also, so why don't you buy one of those instead because the Canon 10D is an old model and no-one carries it until Canon announce the replacment?

Well, the 10D will be replaced. Canon know when, some others probably know, but they sure aren't going to tell us. If the person who told you was sufficiently in the know - i.e. a Canon senior person, you wouldn't have to ask us either. WHEN the 10D gets replaced we'll get told. As a real world item, when it gets replaced, the 10D will still be exactly the same - it doesn't become less of a camera just because a new one is released.

If you were planning to buy a 10D, buy it anyway. If you feel you are the person who gets dissapointed 'missing' something new then wait until post PMA and make sure nothing new is announced, but smart money says the 'new' camera will be a 1D replacement and priced accordingly between the 10D and 1Ds. It's a shame if you wait because you might miss some good photographs.

I checked with B&H today, and they did not have one.
I checked with Ritz Camera outlet today, and they did not have one.
Ritz Camera even does not list 10D on their webpage.

I have been looking for a replacement since I returned my first one

about three weeks ago because of difficulty with AF, and I have not been able to find one.

One retailer suggested an "International" 10D over the phone but did
not tell me what that was.

O.K. It looks like I'll have to wait for a couple of months before Canon
releases their 10D replacement. Thanks a lot for a lot of comments.

hehehe. After one week of chasing the distributor for 10D(I paid full in advance). They confirm to me today, that they fill my order already. And it should be arriving in 2 to 3 weeks time. 10D discontinued? harharhar.

As of 5/Jan/04, 09:37 (GMT + 4), B&H Photo has the 10D in stock,
with the same old price $1499.95.
Yup, looks like they have in stock. Let's assume they didn't have in stock but did the same little status check you or I or anybody else here does. Checked the tracking and felt their (B&H) order is close enough to list it as being in stock for internet orders.

Makes me wonder how many of these cameras Canon has made since introduced.

Yes, they and Ritz were "Made for One Another"

I don't waste my time going there unless I just feel onhery. And once in awhile I do go in and ask them to pull out just about every EOS lens just to tell them "Too high priced", and walk off snickering to myself.
