when i was driving home today there was a BMW behind me with its lights on. When you looked at the lights there was a ring of purple around each light. Ive also noticed that when i look at bright lights reflecting - there is indeed a purplish aurora. So my question is this.... Isnt a camera suppose to capture what exists so I would expect to see purple in these situations although I do admit it is severe in some pics I have taken and seen. Im not complaning at all. Im just trying to think aloud -that "some" purple is indeed suppose to be there ( I think )

its funny you mention that. Ever since this whole purple fringing thing. I've been noticing it everwhere. In TV shows, DVD's, Movies, lighting out and about. I think its always been there, but I at least am more tuned into it now. Although I'm not sure if that's a good thing.

well most German GOOD cars use XENON lights.. making light purple.. so if it was BMW I will expect Xenon lights..

Hehe.. That BMW you saw probably had Xenon HID headlights, which looks blue/purple compared to traditional headlights. Unless you were in heavy smoke or fog, any purple glow you were seeing outstide that headlight would likely have come from astigmatisms in your eye. Like the 828, you're eyes probably aren't perfect . Here is info on CA and how to remove it:

I never noticed noise in images before becoming an STF member... so yeah, you may be right.

That is what is known as CA, it is normal to get it but the 828 has too much, thats what all the complaints are about

I agree wholeheartedly. I see purple fringes everywhere I go now, with any bright light. At first I only saw it through my windshield on a rainy night, so I played it off as a trick of the glass/water. But I see it everynight, and sometimes in the day. Mostly with white lights, but sometimes even with regular street lamps.

The camera has purple fringing, without a doubt. But I think people are blowing it a bit out of proportion. On many (maybe most) of the images that people complain about, the PF is only really noticeable at the full image size, which is much larger than that of the 717 or anything before it. While I'm not saying the problem isn't there (it bothers me as well), I do think that it can be completely dealt with.

Oh, and I happened across an old issue of Smithsonian magazine, just flipping through, and found a picture of a white plane flying through a valley in Iceland. The entire plane was surrounded in purple! And I'm willing to bet it was taken with an SLR (whether film or digital I don't know). Don't know how reputable their photographers are, but it's just further proof that PF can happen in any camera.
