Smugmug vs. Pbase

I am new to smugmug, and just starting up an album there. I thought they were reasonable in price, and nice looking. Don't know yet if they allow animation. That was a biggy to me. But I liked their drag and drop set up, and possibilities there. I also have one at Imageevents and its easy too. I think I will keep both. Good prices at both also. My criteria was bandwidth use/linking.
I am new to digital photography (new F717) and wish to learn your
thoughts about the photo posting services Smugmug and Pbase. Both
seem to be well founded and priced competitively. Because we are
all individuals, I do not necessary need a recommendation but I
would like to know your thoughts about the pros and cons of each
service.

Thanks & Happy New Year,

Tibetanmoon

I am a long term reader, but new poster to this forum. My Sony 828 is currently in the postal system somewhere (grr ;-)) so while I am waiting I want to organise my existing photos (From my Fuji 6800z) on the web somewhere. Smugmug looks really nice, and I have been viewing your wonderful photos on there. Anyway, I digress. My question is:
  • Can I ensure my galleries are private? My wife doesn't want "just anyone" viewing our photographs. Also, can I make some public - i.e non family shots - nice landscapes etc etc?
Thanks for your help in advance...

Regards

Joe

animated gifs? no problem ;)

absoulutely.

you can make them totally private. i have 10,000 photos in private galleries. you choose what you want public and what you want private. you can even have public galleries that require a password if you like :)

good luck!

Thanks Andy, while I got ya attention....what is your take on picture stealing vulnerabilities? I know they can also take screen shots of a disabled pic. But do you keep all your albums open to public, or do you feature just a few? Any suggestions appreciated! I love it so far, by the way!

You get a screen like this for each picture in your galleries that shows the direct links that have been processed on your photo and where the links came from. You can see in my example the many posts that I have used this example picture for. I think that this is a great feature as well with PhotoShare.....

alot's been said about smugmug lately. do a search on stf and
you'll find a ton of threads. here are some really good reasons, in
my opinion, to use smugmug:
2) for $50total per year, you can have unlim storage, plus full
co-branding of your site

Thanks. Living in Arizona and being a fan of Westerns (fiction), that wasn't what I expected co-branding to be :-)
BTW- you have some great photos on your site.

hey,

you have to be at the $49 (power user) per year account in order to customize...

you can upgrade just by looking in your account settings options.

good luck!

i keep many galleries open to the public, but no originals are avaialble. i'm not concerned with someone stealing my small size images. if they do, they do.

it's a fact of life with web photos. but one i'm not too concerned with.

not much you can do with a 640x480 size web image ;)
