Although there are several things I don't like about the 5700, image quality is not one of them. In fact looking at the images on this forum and the Canon forum I can't say there is much difference at all. There are many valid reasons to go with the Rebel but I sure wouldn't rate image quality very high on the list.

They are totally different in most every respect. You first need to decide the correct direction for YOU -- an all-in-one package with known limitations but super carry-ability or a much larger, much more expensive interchangeable lens system with the potential to provide more pleasing images. Read some reviews on this site to get a better understanding of the types and then decide. If it's the lower end DSLR and you can wait, I would want to see the specs on the just announced Nikon D70 that will be previewed next month before making a decision.

If you're going to spend the bucks, go with the D100 or a comparative DSLR. Don't go cheap with the Rebel. I mean, the Rebel is nice, but since you're going to be spending that much anyway...

Basically, either go low price with the 5700 (a high-end prosumer), or go medium-high end DSLR. Don't go for a low end DSLR.

Thanks for sheding some light on this. As you can see, i m a newbie, going for serious amateur photography. So i need all the sugguestions, but of course i will judge for myself, just needed a little help to expand my insights.

If you are nikon's fan, and you have got money, i advice you to buy a Nikon coolpix 5400(more small than 5700 and performance/fast, you can use everywhere, always in your bag for example and SLR for passion....) to beginning as novice and excellent accessories (SB_800 than you can use with D70....) in waiting Nikon D70 to become amateur and use accessories from your n....

If not, you buy D300, it's very excellent camera SLR.... i don't like it only because plastic body and it's not nikon, 'm niikonist....But it's nice camera with more potential.

amateurish,

I though about getting a dRebel for family parties and such events... until I held it... I thought it felt extremely cheap for a camera that cost almost $900.00.

I would suggest going to a store that has one and hold it... I like the pics I have seen in the Canon formum, but when I held the camera... I just didn't feel right spending that much money for a camera that felt that cheap... I would also say if you can get over the feel of the camera... it may be a camera for you...

I have not held or used the CP5700 so I can not really comment on it.

I have held and used the D100... Much nicer feel... and a better performer, I might add. (If you don't mind refurbished... Sams Camera had some for $999.00 but don't know if they still do)

I dislike all compact digital camera because of shuttle lag.
DSLR is almost zero shuttle lag.
5700 is excellent for macro photo
Rebal Digital/300D's body is plastic. Better go with 10D.

You should wait for D70.

We have Sigma SD9. It is nice, super sharper image "10.2" megapixel from 3.4 x 3 colors. I am waiting for next new model D70 or Fuji S3.

Suggest go to camera store to play with few different camera. Ask salesperson to use memory card in camera. You will know how much faster shuttle/shuttle without lag.
I dislike shuttle lag when turtle move that I can't get good picture

Why didn't you ask this same question on the Canon forum?

thats one concern abt coolpix 5700, its not fast enough as i read in the review. i own a coolpix 885, which is so slow it irks me. The next camera i want to get must NOT be slow, coz i couldnt stand the wait.

i think 10D is an overkill for me. i thought 300D fits nicely into the picture -
firstly, price wise
secondly, virtually noiseless all the way up to iso 800 (from wat i read)
thirdly, superior image quality, as using the same CMOS sensor as 10D.
fourth, fast buffering. i cannot stand waiting for image to be saved.

there u got it. i think the feel is secondary for me, at least for now. is Nikon D70 value goin to rival 300D ? i will have to wait n see. but, i m looking for an inexpensive high image quality camera here, be it SLR or prosumer.
