Hi there,

I am looking for a backpack for my stuff (300D/ kitlense / canon50f1.8 / sigma 70-300DL MS / little tripod) with also another compartment where i can put stuff like lunch/clothes/sunglasses/waterbottles and other stuff. The idea is that when i am on a trip... i can use only one backpack.

So far i saw the Lowe Pro Orion Trekker. It looks ok but there is not a good place to put my tripod. Anyone used this bag?

Searching on the internet i saw the Cullman Havana Ranger de Luxe.

It looks pretty good... It is a littel bit bigger than the orion trekker and some more pockets outside and a place for my tripod!

Is there anybody who has used it?

Or has anybody an other suggestion for a backpack with two compartments?

Thx in advance.

Jeroen

Hi mike,

Thx for the tip. Just looked at it on the Lowe Pro site. I like the look and also the All Weather thing. But it looks like a bag with only one compartment.... so it would be difficult to put in other stuff like lunch/waterbottles/maps and stuff ( see original post). Or am i wrong?

I just got the Lowepro mini trekker AW and it is an awesome pack. I
carry two IS lenses the kit lens and the 50mm plus the Sigma flash.

I have been using this bag for over a month now. First impressions were its very flimsy, but the lower compartment is adequately padded and holds my DR with 70-300 APO and kit lens and lens cleaners/ CF cards.

The upper compartment is very handy to carry whatever else you need - in the case of a hike, water and food, a lightweight jacket. There are two small envelope sized zip up pockets in the main compartment for documents, and a front compartment on the outside for cellphones or whatever.

I am a biker and I take my camera everywhere I go. There are two straps - a belt strap and chest strap and only at high speeds (160 km's/hr ++ ) do I feel the shoulder straps moving slightly and then they settle.

Zips are good construction and the material is supposedly weatherproof, but have not tried that out yet.

Cons: If the upper compartment is full it gets a bit clumsy to open the bag, as the top part falls over bakwards the moment you have opened the zips -can bring the whole bag crashing to the floor if not adequately placed on table - so becareful when fully laden upstairs.

More than 3 lenses and you will start to use your upper compartment for storage as well. Probably not ideal for a large setup.

I don't carry a tripod so I have not even thought of were I would put it if I had one.

Pros: Carries everything I need to carry plus space for the extra non-photographic stuff. Seems to be handling my everyday use without a problem.

Hope this helps

On hot days and long walks, you will build up a sweat quite quickly in the area between your back and your bag. This back of the bag will feel wet, as this area is not ventilated adequately as standard hiking bags are. Even though the bag feels wet it does not affect the contents of the bag. (Talking mailny upper compartment here.)

The bag also tends to hang quite low and you will need to adjust the straps to bring it up higher, but it will never have the fit and comfort of a normal hiking backpack. (it always seems to hang low)

My advice is to go to the shops and try on the ones that interest you. Thats the only real way to know what you gonna be comfortable with in the long run (or walk).

Thanks a lot!

I am tall.. so maybe the backpack hanging low is not so bad...

Nice pictures of streetlife in capetown btw.

If u speak afrikaans: dank u (if it is the same as in dutch)
