Did Reichmann go BLIND?!

Donald, you're absolutely right! I laughed when MR compared the D30 to 35mm film, claiming it outresolved it. I had prints done myself...as did a number of my friends....and with the 8x10's and 11x14 we did, film surpassed the resolving power of the D30 enough that it has been obvious to all who have compared my prints. MR then compared the D60 to 35mm film, saying that digital had now equaled his 35mm quality....funny, before this he thought the D30 had. I guess he changed his mind. I'm sure we can all remember the 1ds compared to his Pentax 6x7 film, where he compared a small crop of a window....clearly showing the film outresolving the 1ds....and then to amazment of many, stating the opposite. I guess his opinions are now to be valued higher than what we plainly see with our own eyes.

All I can say is that the 8x10 print comparison I did with the Sony and my 10D @ ISO 400 was no contest. I hate noise, therefore the Sony is unacceptable....& if MR disagrees, then blind he is!!!

Wow, that was quite a compliment sandwich!

But honest and articulate, so thanks.

One thing though--I wasn't saying Paul should put a sock in it, but rather Alfred, when he suggested people should not go to the L-L site.

Being an ex-editor, of course, I have to agree with your point about editors being underutilized and underappreciated. I have a standard subject line when I send my friends particularly egregious examples from the web: it's "Editors needed all over." (g)

I wish I could write my point of view that well!

Anyway, happy new year to all that celebrate it today! (ME? - I'm
going to bed, I'm tired. It has been a long year!)

Alfred
Yes, a hearty and healthy New Year to all. After all, we are all "brothers" in our enjoyment of photography, even though we do get pretty, er, fractious sometimes.

With best regards to all,

Mike:

Just wanted to say that you've enriched my appreciation for
photography more than any other editor/writer on the subject. I've
been a fan of yours since the early days of Camera & Darkroom and
have yet to see anyone else who communicates with his/her heart and
mind as eloquently and perceptively as you do.

I'm glad it's fun for you...and wanted to let you know that many of
us appreciate what you do too.

Have a good New Year everyone.

Tony
Jeez, Tony, you've got me blushing! Thanks, man. That's the best "Happy New Year" I've gotten.

I just put a bunch of new "testamonials" on my website, too...this should be up there!

Have a great 2004.

--Mike

Thanks, Mike! I've downloaded the PDF now. I'll let you know when I get the chance to read it more thoroughly.

best,
Godfrey
Godfrey,
Happy New Year to you too.

You should be able to download a .pdf of Issue #3 (of the
newsletter, I mean) on the "Subscribe" page. A few people have had
problems with it, but most seem to be able to get it.

The trouble is that so far, #3 is the best issue...#'s 4 and 5
haven't quite come up to the same standard. For a long time now
I've been trying to hire a new printer and a new fulfillment house
so I can unload some of the donkeywork and make the mailings more
efficient. I had anticipated a subscribership of about 200, based
on what other photo newsletters circulate, but The 37th Frame has
been a bit more popular than that--it's coming up on 1k
subscribers, despite the high price and small page-count. Frankly,
it has swamped me a bit. This past year I've also been trying to
get my first book out, which has taken more time and trouble than
it should have. I had originally anticipated being able to start
shipping the book in August '03, and as of now (New Year's Eve) I
still don't have a date certain. So this has really eaten into
the time I had hoped to be able to devote to the newsletter this
fall and early winter.

However, one of the nice things about being the Captain of a kayak
is that even when you capsize, you can usually pop right back up
and get going again. (g)

Thanks for the interest--please do go get that download.

Well Clayphish,

All I can say to you is that not only did I have too much time on my hands, I had a nasty sinus infection as well, something that invariably makes me extremely grumpy.

But I found it cathartic ......... LOL
It's a review of a camera!! I'm sure there is something better for
you to spend your time on. Seriously, maybe go out and take some
pictures? I mean it would probably put you above the bar of average
maturity to realize that this is nothing more then "ego crushing"
thats going back and forth. To pay so much attention to this and
take it so seriously is just a waste. I would rather see you post
some killer pictures that you're really proud of.

Why is it that when somebody can't think of anything useful to say, they say "maybe go out and take some pictures"?

We won't get into why YOU weren't out taking pictures instead of typing this. ;)

As for me . . . well, I was supposed to be out taking pictures today (with FredG and Jason Hutchinson). But, I started getting sick yesterday while we were out, so I had to bail on today (and tomorrow).

I just read, and then re-read, Michael Reichmann's new Sony F828
"Review" over at LL -- found here:
http://luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony828.shtml

While the thing is obviously built and designed exceptionally well
for a high-end P&S digicam, I can't help but come away with a
strong sense of "what was he seeing?" when looking at the
comparison images -- particularly the ones shot with the F828 at
ISO 64 compared to ISO 100 on the 10D.

Those 8MP images are so noisy and fail to resolve anywhere near the
detail of the 6MP 10D files as a result -- forgetting even higher
ISOs. Looking at the building detail, it's clear to see that Sony's
new RGBE sensor with such a high density just isn't able to get the
job done.

Perhaps I'm too used to smooth, clean dSLR images, but the F828
images look worse then Kodak's early 14n samples by a wide margin,
and that's none too flattering. They SO hit a home run on the rest
of the features (save for RAW speed) that I was dying for them to
do likewise with the sensor as well. I've been looking closely at
the images posted in STF, but they're all the same, noisy, blotchy
images that Michael has posted.

That's too bad :-(

Things that make you go, hmmmm...

Okay gang, here's my contribution.... I am new to digital photography. Been lurking in both Sony and the various Canon forums for the past few months and only recently registered so I can post. (this is my second) My wife is really irritated that I have been spending soooooo many zoned out hours reading all the interesting threads. ( I suspect it is more of an act, really! ) I have read ALL the comments in this particular thread, and visited most of the links and galleries posted. All I can say is HOLY COW! I never knew such amazing photography existed. You folks have turned me into a hopeless foto fanatic. In a few months I will be in a financial position to purchase a more sophisticated camera than my cheapo A60. (leaning towards 10D) For my two cents, maybe if a vote could be held the majority here might say that MR took a divot on this one. ......and then again maybe they wouldn't. It's up to everyone to make up their own minds. I feel you can learn something from everybody. Heck I have even had some pretty amazing exchanges of views (very friendly of course) with my socialist neighbour. Thanks for letting me get in here with my bit.

Wishing you all an outstanding 2004!

Now it makes sense. Ordeals with sinuses are never fun!! But I would still like to see some killer shots. :)

Because I wanna see some great shots.. thats why!!

Really, I just think that people are taking this whole thing too seriously. I mean we're talking about a point and shoot camera, and whenever there is a review that compares any cheaper camera (like the Drebel) with a 10D people flip out. It's like they can't see someone say anything bad about their precious camera.. It's a camera people.. not a loved one!! It's a material good!! It's like they have this little voice in their head thats saying "you've spent too much money on this camera, you should've gone with a point and shoot" and then to block their regret and guilt they breakout into a sweat and start attacking anyone who has their own opinion.

oh and the reason I'm writing this is because I can't go out and shoot cuz all you would see is white!! Yep its a blizzard outside!! Feel for me because I'd rather be out there shooting something then arguing online. :P

OK. But I don't think I've ever had a killer shot. I'm not really an avid photographer. I can go for weeks without even picking up a camea -- I shot in binges, when I have what I think are some interesting subjects.

Here are a few shots I took a few weeks ago that I like:
