828 request and my thoughts on the 828 v DSLR debate

Hi and Happy New Year!

i think you've made a very valuable point - extra weight can be offset with something that's easier to handle. If you see what i mean.

I think i'm just as concerned about carrying-around-bulk as I am with handle whilst in use bulk. In this respect, from what you've said and shown, the 828 is no pocket cam but it isn't a nightmare to carry around.

Hi Matthew ,

I think that it compares in size to a DSLR has been most of my concern, as the size of my old slr was what made me sell it.
I guess I'll just have to play with one when the shops finally get one in here.

by the way, your gallery is really impressive!

By the way, my own thoughts on the whole 'which is best' debate
goes like this. If you can live with size, weight and cost of a
DSLR and you want the best quality picture possible, surely that is
what you go for? To me it's a no brainer. Personally, I don't want
a big SLR with a selection of lenses. I had a film SLR and found
that I used it less and less because of the size of it alone. So I
don't care if the Drebel or any DSLR is better than a 717, 828 or
V1 etc because it could never fit my requirements. It's that simple
  • for me at least. I know everyone's requirements are different but
that's the way I see the whole argument.

In this case I guess you'd have to wait until some local retailers would have it on display, so you can actaully hold it and make your own decision.

I also do not enjoy of carrying LCS-VAxx (aka Big Padded Case :-) unless I'm travelling, so I do hope that the lighter one (LCS-FHA) will do the trick for me on a day-to day basis.

The biggest "issue" of carrying 8282 for me so far is to find a convenient way to carry the 4-petal lens hood. With the hood in "fire" position camera's lens barrel becomes too long and doesn't seem to fit the VA case, at least unless you remove the extra padding. Also it seems that it will be very easy to break it if you carry it like that. With the hood in the "storage" position (you put it on the barrel backwards) it almost completely blocks the focus and zoom rings, making it pain in the a$$ to operate. Let alone the fact that (according to the manual) it blocks certain parts of metering system.. Again, may be FHA case will do the job.. should arrive in a few days..

heck no, it's easy on the neck, or in the hand. the best way, though, to carry it around, is on my manfrotto tripod, and then the tripod leaning on my shoulder :)

are great . None of my friends is not impressed with the size and built of this camera. It just feels right in the hand. Very well balanced.

Hi Nik,

I've never actually used a lens hood before. Do you think it makes a big enough difference to have to carry it with you all the time?

Hmmm, perhaps you need to find an alternative use for it so that you can carry it in some other way. Let me see...an extra cup holder for the car? Paint it a nice colour and convince your partner that it's a cool, chunky bracelet? Er...maybe not huh?

Actually, it's been a while since I was using the lens hood myself. Technically I only used it on my old Super 8-mm movie camera 10+smth years ago.

However, some (5? 10?) of my California shots do display that romb-shape purple sun thingie, and I think that may be with the lens hood it would not be there.. Anyway, At least now I can try to shoot with it and without it and see if it makes any difference.

I would appreciate any input on this subject, though.. I currently think that it only helps with the sun ALMOST looking right into the lens, just a bit from a side.

It also looks very cool on the camera, thouhg:-)
