What is the differnce between the 2 types of lenses? I see a large price difference between them. Im looking to get a 55-200mm to go along with my kit lens. I see the DC motor version for around $150 while the USM seems to be much more. Thanks

Hmm, I'm not familiar with a DC version, and the Canon camera museum doesn't list it. Are you sure you are looking at the EF 55-200 II, and not the original EF 55-200 that was made for the Canon APS film SLR? They are both micro-USM, but the "II" version is the new one and I think it is considered to have superior optics & build to the original. Do you have a link to the $150 DC version you saw?

USM stands for Ultrasonic Motor and is both faster and quieter than the DC motor on the cheaper lenses. I don't think the difference is huge between the motors; usually the more expensive lenses have higher quality optics which really raise the price more than the USM.

There are two very different ultrasonic motors - micro & ring. In my experience there is very little difference between the DC & micro-USM lenses, for example the EF 75-300 III and EF 75-300 USM III. There is a significant difference between DC/micro-USM and ring-USM.

I have just been looking though Ebay and saw a few that state that the lens has the exact same optics and internals except it uses a DC motor instead of the USM. I just dont want to buy somthing that turns out to be junk.

I continue to believe that there is NO Canon made EF 55-200 DC, the EF 55-200 (both I & II) are micro-USM. There is a Sigma lens that is known as the 55-200mm f4-5.6 DC:

Note that Sigma's "DC" means it is "digital" lens, i.e. only useful with
cameras that have APC-sized sensor (like Digital Rebel or 10D), but
not with 35mm film (film Rebel) or full-sized sensor camera (1Ds).

You are right I miss read it. Here is a link to what I was talking about.

It says micro not USM. Thanks.

OK - that is the EF 80-200, not the EF 55-200. There are actually 4 versions of that lens - the EF 80-200 f2.8L (ring-USM & big money L-lens), the EF 80-200 f4.5-5.6 (non-USM, DC motor), the EF 80-200 f4.5-5.6 USM (micro-USM), and the EF 80-200 f4.5-5.6 II (non-USM, DC motor). The last one is the current issue consumer lens.

B&H has that lens brand new for $120 or $100 for the grey market version. It is small & light, but you are exactly right you get what you pay for in the Canon lenses, and the 80-200 is one of the lower-end lenses. An 80-200 f4.5-5.6 is a pretty slow aperture. Personally, I chose the EF 75-300 f4-5.6 for a bit more money because I wanted the extra reach and I had read it is sharper at 200mm than the 80-200.

There are actually two versions of the micro USM motor, though I agree with you that there is little difference between the micro-USM and AFD lenses as far as focusing speed is concerned.

Greg

Yup - I screwed-up - that one was put in the L line-up prior to the ring-USM.

By the way, I found AdamT's positive review of the 80-200 II.
http://www.mankman.com/Lens_Tests/lens_framework.html

I still think I would rather have a larger aperture in that focal range. Maybe I can save my money for a used 80-200 F2.8L - they are about the same price as a new 70-200 F4L - and I could probably live with the slower AF to get the larger aperture and sharp optics. With a 1.4X TC it would be a big improvement @ 300mm over my cheap 75-300 f4-5.6 III.
The EF 80-200mm f/2.8L is not a ring USM lens but instead a DC
motor lens.

Greg

I have had a couple of 80-200mm f/2.8L lenses and I must say that they are excellent optically and the AF is surprisingly fast despite not having a USM. The 80-200mm f/2.8L doesn’t give up much to its 70-200mm f/2.8L cousins as far as focus speed goes.
