I have Photoshop CS (8) and tried the "trial" download of C1. Didn't really see an advantage to the C1 app. Did I miss something? Is C1 really worth the investment ??

Thanks and Happy New Year!

thanks Kent.

The color profile thing is above my head at this time......I need to read up it for a beter comprehension.

I've tried the trial version of C1 and bought PSCS. Personally, I like having everything in photoshop although C1 had 1 advantage I liked which was the batch processing. The more I play with PSCS the more I like it but I cannot say anything bad about C1.

Danny,

Take it from someone who's processed thousands of RAW images. CS ACR is just plain clunky from start to finish, even using Russell Brown's script for batch output.

ACR does a decent job though and it does have a nice chroma noise remover that works failry well and it is included in CS.

The thing with processing in C1 is that you find you don't even need to use PS for any color editing or cropping, only touchups. Plus the realtime review in C1 is fast and convenient. I find it hard to believe Adobe released ACR with the browser as a separate entity.
Regards,
VG

VG,

I am starting to shot raw, have PS CS, BreezeBrowser, C1 (and need to get a noise remover). Would you consider the following workflow a good one ?

( )In C1 : deletion of the bad pictures, EC, WB, No sharpening, No NR. Output a TIFF file

( )In neatimage/noise ninja : noise cleaning for images with ISO> =800

( )In PS : specific retouching, resizing, cropping.

Thanks !

Use C1 for noise reduction as well. The last stop from the right does a good job without much image degradation.

Use C1 for resizing and cropping also and you'll only need PS for retouching or other more specific editing requirements.

Thanks. Do you use C1 for sharpening ? I kinda like the two-layers sharpening technique in PS.

For me, it's a no-brainer. C1LE consistently gives me useable conversions in hi-lite areas that are near being overexposed. The same image, when converted with ACR2, completely blows out the hi-lites. I've tried everything to recover them in ACR2, with no luck.

Thanks !

I vary the sharpening, sometimes none, sometimes a lot. It all depends on the image makeup and my intended output. I rarely use the Standard sharpening though as I prefer the soft.

Danny, the more I use CS the more I like it. I actually have found a set of parameters that give me excellent results each time. The only reason I liked the batch processor feature in C1 was that I could batch 20 or so photos and they would be converted when I went to supper. I just found it easier.

The other feature I liked about C1 was that you could use different profiles such as Colin Walkers or Magnes that they developed for a specific camera. These profiles do not seem to be developed for CS and I found that the default profile wasn't to my liking. That being said, I will stay with CS as I am getting more and more familiar with it and find that I can match the output of C1 and I like the complete workflow within the same program.

My workflow and settings are:

1: adjust exposure (when doing this hold down the alt key to see when you are getting blown highlights) - check histogram as well

2.: adjust shadows (when doing this hold down the alt key as well check the histogram)

3: I use auto for the white balance settings and then usually bump it up about 200 (ie if auto produces a color temperature of 5500 I boost it up to 5700 just to add a little warmth to the image)

I start with the rest of the settings at
Brightness 50
Contrast +42
Saturation +18
Red saturation -3 (in calibration tab)
Green saturation -15 (in calibration tab)

I must give credit to Jim Collins who posted the contrast, shadows, red saturation and green saturation settings.

The above settings seem to work well for me for a starting point. Then in the regular part of photoshop I usually only have to adjust for things like blemishes, red eye etc and then at the end do an unsharp mask.

... period. It opens your RAW file with the same speed as if it was just some random TIFF or PSD file and shows you all the changes that you make in realtime WITHOUT showing pre-pixelized image. You finally can conveniently select magnification (from a combo box). The only missing feature for me is blowout warnings, but this is compensated in part by other features missing from C1. I've chosen PS CS as you may have guessed. Side by side with C1 LE tryout it's a lot better value.

The only "missing" feature is already there as it turns out. If nothing else helps, read the manual. :-)

Thanks for your tip. It works beutyfully. First time I can easily get good colors in PS CS.

But...
There's one problem in CS. There is some defects in files processed in CS.
Here's my earlier sample:

Have any of you experienced this? If I go ISO400 or above I have to use some other SW (than Adobe Photoshop CS) to convert files.

unfortunately, C1 doesn't allow adjustment of individual RGB curves. I can get pretty close in C1LE before converting to TIF. Then I open in PSCS, do a highlight/shadow adjustment, do a final adjust of color curves, and a final sharpening with focalblade.
Thanks !

Tomi - In the PS CS RAW Conversion did you try using the noise reduction sliders under the "detail" tab. Try moving the "Luminance smoothing" and "color noise reduction" sliders and see if it makes any difference. It made some difference to some shots I mistakenly took as ISO 1600. They at least made them very acceptable. I'm sure that Noise Ninja or Neat Image could have done better but I was happy with the noise reduction that PSCS did. Hope this helps.
