In the review the author explains in detail as to why the 1.6 factor does not apply to the kit lens. Everywhere else I have read states otherwise. Was the author given misinformation or did he just make an eroneous assumption?

Hi Dan,

I can only assume everybody else is right, any way it's never bothered me because it is what it is.
Someone with more knowledge than me will probably give you a better answer.

I don't know what the author said, but you do not get the equivalent of 18mm on a 35mm camera with the kit lens.

You get the 1.6 x 18mm equivalent.

Haven't read the article but I would assume that he might be referring to the lens optics to not have the ability to be used on a full 35mm format due to the design of the lens. The optics wouldn't accomodate the larger format. But it is still a 18-55mm lens utilizing the 1.6 multiplication factor, thus making it 28.8 - 88mm on the rebel.

Mike

"A standard zoom exclusively for the EOS Digital Rebel SLR camera with the APS-C size image circle equivalent to an approx. 28-90mm focal length."

I don't own this lens since I own the 10D... but found the info on the website..... hope that helps

Just in case:

click the link at the bottom about the 18-55 lens......

The author is very clear in stating the 1.6 does not apply to the kit lens. He explains this is because the kit lens is specially designed to sit further into the camera. He claims the lens was designed to eliminate the conversion factor. I think it is funny because where did he get this? I think he misunderstood something Canon wrote him.

All he needed to do was put another lens on the camera and check what appears in the view finder at the same focal length.

Geez, must be nice to be an author for that magazine. Wonder if he will have a retraction in the next publishing, I'm sure many readers will be correcting him :)
