Santa bought me some watercolor pencils, so I tried them out on a photo. Has potential I think.... Pics cropped heavily. Ran my sketch action first.. Printed on Epson 2100, Archival Matt paper, then used the pencils and a brush to smear. Technique needs working on but....

What an artist does in LaJolla Calif. he adds a little paint here and there, often a slight metallic gold or silver touch to his canvases and he is making a killing off his prints, people go wild for them and he sure gets the big bucks for each one.

So is that "matt" paper, or "matte" paper...seems like too nice a piece of work to just lay it down in front of a door.... :-)

Looks like a great technique-can you post the picture of the sketch action before your painting. You sent me googling to find out what watercolor pencils are-looks like a fun thing to try. Might be a silly question but how much artistic ability do you need ( i have none that i have discovered yet)
Think i could handle the smearing with a brush part:)

A bit pricey, but could be neat when used with any one of your awsome renderings......
Saw this at a local art store...looked very interesting.....

I have been looking here in NZ for canvas 19" x 13" but alas haven't found any yet. I am about to try some different papers though.

Hi Patsy...

I have heard about that guy.. Haven't seen any of his work. But I tried that years ago... Nobody paid :-)

I like to try to lose the photo altogether and make people believe it's all hand done.... just my "thing" at the moment.

Not sure about S&H to NZ, they say US / CAN only, but it never hurts to call them. Or you might be able to get a local art store to place an order directly from the manufacturer..

Things I have found...

You need a good selection of pencils 36 or more. I have 12.
A good pencil sharpener, cheap plastic are not much good.
At least one very fine tipped brush, I have none.
A soft eraser and keep it clean.

I'm off to the shop tomorrow.

Looks really nice and sounds fun. I'm wondering how stable the finish is and can you spray it afterwards to maintain? If so Ed G. may be able to use this effect on his cards.

Having done a tiny amount of research on colored pencils, it seems there are varying grades, some are more light fast than others. So it remains to be seen. But my plan/idea is to use this method only as a step to the final digital image.
1: Take a nice photo.

2: Use your favorite action/method/technique to lose the photo and make a sketch.

3: Print it greyscale and hand color it with water color pencils (Easy).

4: Rephotograph/scan it and do more work on the digital file...smudge, enhance, sharpen, Hue/Sat etc etc.

5: Print the final image on the epson 2100/2200 on Archival paper.

I am sure it would work for Ed.
