Went digital recently and searching for best online gallery host.
Currently I'm usingt a 30 day trial at pbase and am pretty happy with it.

What are the alternatives; some points of consideration
  • What do you currently use and do you like it?
  • Free vs. Paying options. How much do you pay and is it worth the $$?
  • Ease of use? changing layout, uploading,...?
  • How would u grade the layout.
  • Finally, please add a link to your gallery so I can get some ideas.
Tnx!

a service called SmugMug http://www.smugmug.com/price/

I used pBase befor it it was a Pay site but, I think SmuMug has better options An unlimited number of photos can be stored for only $29.95 per year. See this link for what I am talking about when I say better options http://onethumb.smugmug.com/

Notice how you can link different galleries and even ones own website.

I have used a number of them
Webshots
Club Photo
Ophoto
Shutterfly

and a couple others that went out of business (does anyone remember photopoint??)

Webshots, I like the layout and ease of use, but they don't allow linking to the photos which is important to me

It's been awhile since I've used Ophoto and Shutterfly, but as I remember, my issues were the same as Webshots.

I have a lot of photos on Clubphoto now, but will not resubscribe because I don't like the way the site compresses my photos - they often just don't look right.

I've pretty much settled on pbase. I like the lay-out, the statistics, the appearance of the photos, and the ability to remote link to them. pbase is more expensive than clubphoto to be sure, but the product is better.

Hope this helps

Bill

Hey Johnny,

Smugmug really looks impressive.

Do they have more than one style of layout? The five galleries I visited were the same style.

I am now seriously considering smugsmug. I like the unlimited amount of photos that can be posted.

Thanks for visiting my gallery Rich, terrorism and war coverage can be scary sometimes. However, it's also a passion.

The pics were all taken with the N80 and scanned. I'm so glad to have gone digital now. I plan on returning to shoot some more in the Middle East in a few months.

Thanks for the info,

You raised an important point. You dont want to put tons of work only to find the hoster has gone out of business.

I'll check out your various sites.

I've been on smugmug for 7 months now and it's great. Another nice feature is you can easily hot link to any of your photos, even at different sizes. The upload is easy and fairly fast, I have high speed cable.

I currently use PhotoReflect. I like SmugMug, but it looks easy for someone to take a photo, same with Pbase. Some photos I don't mind sharing or for others to view for oppion. But I like to sell photos and don't want the customer to be able to copy it and then print it without purchasing. Does SmuMug have protection like watermarking, etc....?

Terry
I'm not planning to build my own website.

I'm looking for a complete package that does everything for me andl
offers cuztomization options.

Another option you may consider is to use software like ExhibitEngine to create your own gallery. I found this software to be the best and most flexible (short of writing your own pages) You can either use it on your own server, or (like most people) use web space provided by your ISP. You can check them out at:

I use imageevent http://imageevent.com and like it a lot. I can configure it closer to how I want better than another site, although smugmug would be a close second choice because of the way a user can customize the layout. That is probably the thing I like most. Also, no advertisements and the layout is not cluttered.

Imageevent is $25/year for 1500 images (no limit on size of each image or maybe it's 2MB - can't remember). A one time charge of $25 for an additional 1500 images if desired. Yes, it id worth it to me.

Very easy use and uploading, with several ways you can upload including but not limited to e-mail and FTP. The other options are to click on one of two different types of uploading and another window will open showing you an Explorer type of of display. Then just select the image(s).

I can easily personalize the layout with many different options. Other "albums" can be personalized the same way by selecting the album which you have personalized to use as the "template" within the same folder, but if you personalize another album in another folder, that "template" will not appear as an option so you'll have to configure it from the start again. I suggested that they allow albums in other folders to be personalized from templates anywhere in my site and said that they were working on it.

That brings up another nice thing I like about Imageevent - very good customer support. I always get a response in a day or two and they seem very responsive to suggestions to make their site better.

I would grade Imageevent as the best (for me, of course). Smugmug would be second and pbase third (don't like the layout of those sites as much).

No link to my site as everything is password protected. Well, okay, http://imageevent.com/login is the link to my site, but you won't see much other than a user name and password to enter.

I can allow passwords in folders (containing albums) and or albums to keep images private. If the password is the same, you won't be prompted for a password to any place (folder or album) unless the password is different).

Linking images is allowed (from anywhere - e-bay, forums, etc.). There is no restriction on the bandwidth so it doesn't matter how many times the link is accessed. I've seen some sites that have a restriction on the bandwidth from linking so if a lot of people want to view your picture (which is either imbedded in a post or from people clicking on a link to the image) it may affect you by charging you more if you need more bandwidth. Fortunately Imageevent has no restriction like this.

A contact sheet of an album you have can be e-mailed, and clicking on a thumbnail in this sheet will direct them to that image.

When customizing an album, you can select to inhibit rightclicking to save the image, but as you probably know that's only a deterrent for someone wanting to save an image - just hover the cursor over the image and the save option will be given).

seems very cool. I'd love to see an example of a gallery. Do you know of any non password protected gallery from other users?

Just go to their home page http://imageevent.com and select "galleries" on the top to view some public (non-password) galleries. Unfortunately, all of the galleries I looked at had the same layout which is a poor example of what can be done.

These are just some of the things you can configure to personalize your site.

background color (I use black)
text color changable for several different areas
text size can be changed in some areas using HTML code
thumbnail size
default size to open image when enlarged
number of thumbnails across a page
number of thumbnails per page

It might be worth trying which is free for a month or so.
