Anyone has tried converting RAW file with both Photoshop CS & Nikon Capture 3. Any difference in results? I need confirmation on the result I got using both software for RAW convertion. Let just hope I have a wrong setting on my Photoshop CS color profile.

I performed extensive tests on the original Camera Raw plug-in for PS7, and found it rife with flaws. I reported them to Adobe and got lots of attention on the issues I reported, and an admission that there were some problems. The main issue was a marked lack of detail in shadow areas compared to NEF's converted in Capture 3.

With the new CS, where raw conversion is built-in, I did some checking and although it seems improved, still doesn't give the smooth tones that NC3 provides. Skin tones and colors in general are too saturated in its default setting, though I didn't spend a lot of time tweaking it. What little effort I put in never achieved the tonal excellence I've learned to expect from NC3. Shadow detail is better than the old plug-in, but not as good as NC3, and playing around with the settings doesn't achieve an acceptable compromise for my tastes.

Thus, I'm still using NC3 as my standard raw converter and only use the CS converter for viewing in PS. Just my 2¢.

I have read the same thing. I decided to upgrade the CS even though I have Capture 3.5x. I also heard that the newer Capture 4 creates even better results for color and clarity. (anyone able to confirm)

I am referring to a NON-D2h nef file. Thanx

Well, I'll post some of the convertion tomorrow to get some comment. To me, the convertion in Photoshop CS has some serious problems.

Sorry for the delay in posting because photos in another PC.

I get better colors with NEF files in Photoshop CS if I use the Nikon plugin than if I use the builtin Adobe converter.

Hi,

I my opinion, Capture - with a few problems of its own and needing dedication and time in order to take the most of it - is the best.

I have CS and I also have Nikon capture v3.52, but I am not aware that you have a "CHOICE" as to which plugin to use to open the NEF file in PShop. Would you clarify?

I'm getting weird colors too. Here's a quick comparison ( http://heydanlee.com/compare.htm ). I just downloaded the CS demo, so user error may have something to do with it.

I guess you don't officially have a choice, but when Nikon Capture is installed it loads a plugin into the Photoshop CS plugin directory. If this plugin is present, then PS uses it to convert the NEFs; if it is not present, then it uses its own raw converter. I simply move the plugin in or out of the directory depending on which one I want to be used.

The Nikon plugin for NC 4 is called 'Nikon NEF Plugin.8Bi' and is found in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins\Adobe Photoshop Only\File Formats

Note: Photoshop must be restarted each time you move the plugin before it will recognize the change.

Have fun,
Rich

On my monitor, the Capture image has more blue. Also, when you do a close up on the rocks, the CS image is all one color. In the Capture image, the rocks have different shades of black/rust.

There is a big contrast difference between the two. Not sure what
you mean about weird colors.

Please confirm the VERSION, DATE and SIZE of the Nikon NEF plugin you are using in Photoshop.

Clarification: I just installed Capture 4.0 and rebooted. There was NO Nikon Nef plugin installed in the directory you mentioned. A search found the file "Nikon NEF Plugin.8Bi" in the C:\Program Files\Nikon\NkView6 directory. (but NO WHERE in the photoshop directory)

If you right click and highlight the Nikon NEF plugin and select PROPERTIES, then VERSION tab, then highlight PRODUCT VERSION, the VALUE will display as 2, 3 and the FILE VERSION will state 2.3.0.3000

Size: 260 KB (266,240 bytes)
Modified Date: Wednesday, December 04, 2002, 9:58:58 AM

What has me perplexed is this modified date. I was under the impression that Nikon upgraded their converter. Also why I am NOT finding it in the directory you mentioned.

TIA for any clarifications.

Hi

I checked mine, and I have the same situation. There is no file by that name in the Photoshop CS directory. I have the same 2002 version in other directories. I think that is normal I had Photoshop CS on my system. I removed Capture 3.5.2 last week, and installed Capture 4.0.

Philly,

Mine reads File Version: 3.0.0.3003 with a modified date date of July 11, 2003. Several people have indicated that this plugin didn't install into the correct directory especially if you have older versions of Photoshop still installed. I think it loads into the first PS directory that it finds - mine was under PS 6 and I had to copy it over.

It is only 316k - I can email it to you if you want.

Hmmm ... might have been Nikon View 6 instead of Cap 4 that installed it - I don't remember exactly.

I have Nikon NEF Plugin.8bi ver 3.0.0.3003 in NikonView6. During the install, NV6 put this file into the file format subdirectory of Photoshop Elements automatically, but did not install it into Photoshop CS.

Just manually copy NEF Plugin.8bi from NikonView6 into the Photoshop-CS plugins/file format directory. If you want to make doubly sure that Nikon's own (and latest) converter is being used when you open NEFs in PS, temporarily move the PS Nikon raw converter file (which is in the same directory) into another PS directory (like the plugins root directory) for safe-keeping.

Just for clarification, the NEF Plugin.8bi is in the Nikon\NkView6 directory. You can COPY (don't move it!) this file to the Adobe\Photoshop CS\plug-ins\file formats directory, if you wish to use Nikon's raw converter instead of Adobe's raw converter.
