WOW!! Ulysses do you think they'll make a model like the Sony F828? Don't read too deep into that, I like Sony products it was more a question of curiosity!
Canon isn't naming names, but they clearly have set their sights on
taking over and wrenching control of the world market for digital
cameras from all other competitors. Do you think they could
possibly do so?

Both Tv and Radio. Every time I tune in I see or hear a Canon Commercial and their "DIGICCCCC" chip. lol. No doubt, they are going to try to get that market share.

The Canon G5 is an example of a confusing and ugly product and when you see the brilliantly designed Sony P72 (3 megapixel, less sophisticated I know) compact digicam, you understand why Sony don't need to make 20 cameras, but instead, focus on good design and selling more of the same model. The P72 like all Sony digicams has a excellent menu system, a well designed 4 way controller with central OK button, good lens (after all, that is what counts) and of course, near DVD quality full motion video with sound in a camera that is available here in the UK for about £249 inc VAT.

Canon make great optics and if they could make their cameras as easy to use and offer the same value for money as Sony, then they could achieve their goals, which will push Sony to work even harder which is good for us, the creative consumer!

Thoughts?

Sure, why not? Sony, Microsoft, IBM, Nestle, McDonalds,... now Canon. They seemed to have gotten their act together, maybe that will make the others get theirs in gear too! ;-)

OTOH, Olympus seems keen on a comeback, Nikon and Minolta too... So we'll see if Canon really has what it takes to take 'em all on. I predict we may see some mergers in the near future, e.g. Konica-Minolta. Sony and Samsung, for example, have had some deals. Samsung digicams support both MS and CF and Samsung has released a new line of camcorders that closely resemble many models from Sony's 2002-2003 line.

That's being a bit backward looking. I can imagine a hundred years ago a company that made wooden carts saying about the motor-car "companies out there that have no experience producing horse-drawn carts have yet to create a horseless cart that performs like a real cart should."

Well, that's great news! A giants battle could only benefit to one party, that is us, the end consumer. Let them do it and we'll see who's gonna provide us with the best product...

come on, what are you big buys doing out there. Let's get into a fight. Yeap, some one out there doesn't know about film camera. Just jump into the ring to beat them out.

I love it when big guys are fighting for the market. All I care is the best little camera on the shelf at the retail stores.

Can they make a Powershot G6 - 6mp, 8x optical zoom, EVF, all other features remain almost the same with some improvements? Has some slight noise at ISO50 but with post processing they shine. ;-) Also blooming/purple fringing and barrel distortion at wide angle.

I think Canon will fail if they think of quantity rather than improving their camera quality. I was thinking of A80 but the built quality simply puts me off. Same goes to the D300.

Although Sony is not perfect (far from perfect indeed, too expensive and monopolistic with their memory stick), their cameras are often well built and attractive. G5? ughh..no thanks!

I think Canon will gain ground with the Rebel, but if it releases more G5 kind of products, it will lose ground in that area. The g5 was far from perfect lets just say. : )

Do you mean camera quality or picture quality? :)

Isn't Olympus going to release cheaper versions of their E-1? And now many would be waiting for the Nikon D70 before committing instead of rushing out to buy a 300D now.

2004 will be the year of the D-SLR... :-)

Yeah, G5 is not for me too... :-

How can you cover all available camera markets without being redundant?

You have:
mini cameras
low end
mid range
high end
Low end SLR
mid range SLR
high end SLR

Even if you made two models for each one of those markets, thats still only 14 new cameras. Are there other markets I'm missing? I just dont see the need in flooding the market with all of these cameras.

This particular line kind of makes me smile.........

Oshiyama said Canon planned to launch "about twice" as many compact digital cameras in 2004 as the nine it rolled out this year. That would help it achieve a market share of 25 percent, up from around 20 percent in 2003 and 15 percent last year.

THAT...... assumes a great deal of things!!

It assumes those 20 models will ALL be successful
It assumes those 20 models will STAY at 20 models
It assumes everyone else is going to just roll over and play dead

Like I said, ambitous but may or may not be realistic (25 % share?)

I wish them luck and, hope they give us great choices!! :-)

However: if they DO try to dominate what Sony right now basically dominates and, Sony does not bother with the DSLR route, where does that leave Sony....... in the dust?

Canon is going for it for sure. Sony already is having a hard time (Bloomberg magazine header in October was "Canon clicks as Sony stumbles" if I remember correctly.)

BUT: what amazes me is the brand loyalty displayed by Sony users in this forum. There are several messages like "the 828 can't be compared to a Digital Rebel." floating around these days (I don't want to comment this statement beyond that point.)

well at least you gals and guys are clicking Sony.

Cheers,
Sharif
