Travelling to Hong Kong in about two weeks time and would appreciate any advice on:

a) what to look out for (in particular) when purchasing lenses in HK (intl warranty, 'bad' stores/areas etc)

b) 'good' stores (price, service, reliability etc)

BTW, planning to purchase one of/or both of the following lenses:

24-70L
70-200L 2.8 IS

Many thanks in advance.

Mike

Ok, here's where I shop in Hong Kong. Tin Cheung in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon Photo Services in Yau Ma Tei, Man Shing/Wing Shing in Mongkok, Photo Scientific in Central (for film/darkroom stuff). All these are reputable and know their stuff. You can also try the chain electrical store like Fortress and Broadway if you prefer but they don't usually carry much in the way of lenses.

Generally speaking, avoid stores on Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui (except Tin Cheung, who are fine) as many are tourist rip-off stores (bait and switch etc.)

For warranties, check when you buy. I think all Canon lenses have an international warranty, but don't quote me on it.

As a photographer based at HK, what mr dazzler is generally right.

There are two types lenses selling,
1-) Canon/Nikon Hong Kong warranty lenses

2-) Imported lens, which carry generally 7 days warranty from the shop.I am not sure whether they carry international warranty or not.The prices of them are generally 10-20% cheaper than 1).

For 1), you should go to Man Shing/Wing Shing because they are reputable and the prices are lower. However, their customer services SUCKS. if you want better services, go to Kowloon Photo Services or Tin Cheung .

If you prefer 2), goto Tin Cheung , Kowloon Photo Services or Salon, NEW SANKYO CAMERA at Goldenmile Holiday Inn in Tsim Sha Tsui.

For the two lens specified, i own the IS one, Man Shing/Wing Shing are selling them at USD 1653.

For the 24-70L, Man Shing/Wing Shing are selling them at USD 1192.

Let me know if you want further information.

I don't remember the name of the street offhand for Kowloon Photo but it's near Shanghai Street in Yau Ma Tei. You can check the exact address at http://www.yp.com.hk/

Tin Cheung sell Sigma as well as Canon but Kowloon Photo don't sell Sigma if that's relevant to you.

I agree the service is better in these two than Man Shing/Wing Shing.

Sure, we never close here in HK! You can always call to double check when you get here, see the link in the post above for HK yellow pages.

on finding lenses with international warranty... I heard that lenses bought from the US "can" carry an international warranty... don't know about other countries. A poll thread here revealed very different findings, but mostly "no international warranty, only US". Too bad for me.
My flash -bought in France- had an international warranty, though.
I'd like to hear about your findings in HK!

My kit lens purchased with the 300D has an international warranty.

My sigma 70-300 apo II has an international warranty all bought in Hong Kong.

I will buy the 50mm 1.8 this weekend and I ask if the other canon lenses have international warranty or not.

Hi,

Bought mine at last for USD$79

Some shops were selling them at $90.

Anyhow, all canon and sigma lenses bought in HK that are NON GREY market ones all have International Warranty.

I have no idea about Grey Market ones.

Coz I live in HK, it's easier to goto a shop and pick one out rather than buying online so I have no idea about online sites in HK.

BTW, the return policy for buying things in HK is not the same as in the US. You can only return it (usually within 7 days) if there is something wrong with it.
