Does Nikon Repair usually take forever to service equipment?

I dropped off my D100, SB-80dx, SC-17 flash cord and my 24-120vr to get all serviced on the 4th of December. I was told it would take 7 days to service all my equipment. It is now passed 7 days and they've been giving me the run-around concerning this work order. Also their customer service has been dismal at best. Honestly, how does a company run such terrible customer service? It just makes me want to go Canon, but I don't care for Canon either. Anyways, what are the average wait times with getting equipment serviced at Nikon? Anybody else feel dissapointed by their treatment (specifically Nikon Torrance)?

Well, I made the mistake of sending my camera via Ritz to Nikon, but of the 38 days it was gone, only 7 of that was repair time with Nikon (Torrance).

I was actually quite satisfied with Nikon (altough compared to Ritz, they would have been hard pressed to be any worse :)

Jonathan,

I think its a camera company thing.
Case in point.

I sent my Tokina 80-200 2.8 into have a D100 upgrade (covered by warranty) in October and was told it would be about a month.
Well, its going on 2 months now and they still have it.

Each time I call it's a different story, I told them to just send me a new lens and cover under their warranty. We can all guess how that went over.

Now they say it will ship on Thursday or Friday..... same thing they told me last week.
I can't wait until I call them tomorrow and see what the new excuse will be.

Well I'm just mad because I'm leaving on a two week trip tomorrow and I need my camera. If they told me 7 days, I expect 7 days. Plus I missed several key work days. I also have a feeling they're just going to hold my equipment over the holiday and make me wait longer.

How many people have had bad experiences with the service centres in the States. There is a new Nikon owned centre here in Warsaw that has just opened (previously it was an approved 3rd party), I had my 5700 serviced with them and got the camera back early even though they had warned me that it might take longer because of the christmas rush. Even got a discount on the job.

It just looks like the service quality control from Nikon USA management just isn't happening. Really a shame.

I sent my 70-200VR in and it took about three weeks. I also sent a Canon body in and that took 4 months.

They both stink. Nikon just stinks less.

Took 1 month to get my mirror fixed in my D100. When I got it back some how they had managed to screw the battery usage up. Now battery dies overnight even with the camera turned off!

I feel the same way about Canon.

Here is the latest on the lens repair saga from hell.

I really love my Tokina 80-200 2.6 BUT the service under warranty
sucks putting it nicely.

It's now been 2 months and its not finished yet.

Called Thursday numerous times...... noone would return my message or answer.

Called today ONLY to hear the recording that we closed at noon try calling again on Monday.

This type service will PLAY HEAVILY in mind about EVER purchasing another Tokina lens or recommending anybody buy one. Its a shame their service is so bad since the lens is really good.

Waiting until Monday.....blah blah blah.

Just hope you don't have to have you shutter replaced on a D1x, mine was in nikon sevice for 72 days thats not including shipping. There was a silver lining though since it was on parts hold I added some additional repairs. like having the protective screen over the lcd replaced, I asked for the rubber to be repaced on the CF door and they ended up replcacig about 70% of the overall rubber cover.A new metering switch and firmware upgrade. All these we're done to the camera without any increase to the original repair quote. Which only covered the new shutter, rear selector switch and a CCD cleaning. When I finally got my camera back I had to check the serial #, I thought they'd sent a new one instead..

I got mine back on the 22nd, sent to me overnight delivery after I told them I couldn't pick it up, since I was out of state on vacation. My D100 practically came back as a brand new camera. They replaced several items and they even fixed my loose, creaky CF door! Overall I was very impressed. My flash came back with replaced parts and the SC-17 cord I sent in, was replaced with a brand new one free of charge, even though it was my fault for spilling my mix drink on it when I was at a party!

My lens is still in shop, but I'm a little concerned about my CCD sensor, when I got it back I found 2 tiny hot pixels that I never noticed before, but the camera works fine except for that. I don't know if it's worth sending in, and being without my camera for another couple weeks?
i sent mine in on December 16 and got it on the 24th, 8
days....happy with it :)

........... we have a lot of reports of slow service repairs one Russian guy is without his new 70~200AFSVR for months, my own SB80 flashgun is lost after three monhts (I replaced it with one for my Canon instead) and so on.

Nikon have cut everything to the bone, service and support suffers the most in these situations. It won't get better until a lot more cameras are sold.

I've been considering going with Nikon's NPS (nikon professional sevice) another PJ I know swears by it, He says it will move you up the repair list and they will supply you with loaner equipment when yours in in repair. He also said that nikon will take trade ins from their NPS members. He works for a news network that supplies all their photographers with the service and even pays their dues.

My question is are there any freelance or working Professionals using this sevice and what is your opinion...Pro's/Con's...

Jonathan. Apply for Nikon Professional Service, you qualify for it with the kind of work you do, you pretty much only need a tear sheet.

show up with tear sheet to the torrance office.

it will make a big difference..

best,

.... mostly.

NPS or CPS is of relatively little value to me where I live but is nonetheless better to have than not.

Nikon’s service was disappointing but that’s a policy decision with UK management, they otherwise did prioritise my issues but loan equipment was not available.

Canon Ireland told me that CPS did not matter and I’d need to return my camera to the shop and the local rep would pick it up when he passed by and give to Dublin who in turn would send to the UK with the next batch and turnaround would be six weeks if I was lucky.

I thought this was totally preposterous and complained to Canon Europe who arranged for the camera and lens to go directly to the UK’s main workshop, a total turn around of one week almost to the hour. Canon said they do have loan equipment but it’s a case of potluck if anything is actually available at the time of the incident.

If one were able to physically visit a main service centre then I suspect that either service would actually work better.

So whilst I cannot avail of the full potential of the professional services, it’s still far better to have than not, the free gifts are nice and the magazines and offers of new gear previews and the newsletters and shop discounts are all nice.

Nikon’s initial NPS is/was five years, my CPS expires in one year. CPS also offered links to international insurance with total destruction and war included; I have not recently checked the Nikon insurance (they were working on it) it might be worth visiting just for that actually.

So it’s a mixed bag, but I’ll keep it up when I have to pay for it.
