Problems with 75-300 IS

I borrowed my friends 75-300 IS, which he had stashed somewhere in the closet for past two years (crazy, I know) and went shooting. First thing I noticed is that it focuses way slower than 18-55, which I have on my 300d. Then, when I tried to use IS, it suddenly died. Instead of aperture numbers in viewfinder I got "00" and when I tried manual focusing and took one picture, it changed to Err 01.

It only crashes with the IS on, sometimes it happens instantly, sometimes after a while.

Did anyone experience a similar problem?

I wanted to buy this lens from him, but now I obviously can't, and I'm frustrated.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

I have a similar problem. With the 75-300 IS attached, my 300D "reboots" when half-pressing the shutter release. The same lens operates problemfree on my EOS 5.

Canon support guessed that's an adjustment problem of that individual camera body and asked me to send in body and lens.

This lens was also used on EOS 5. Guess I'll have to contact Canon. Thanks for the reply.

I don't have my manual with me, but is your battery ok? If the lens works ok otherwise, IS does need some more juice
