My new Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS is sitting in the kitchen on the counter. It's my XMAS present. It's not wrapped...it's just sitting there...and my wife won't let me touch it. Oh, the agony of it all!!!!!!!!!!!!

too sad!

what wrong with your wife?
She had me order it. When it arrived I opened the brown box from B&H just to make sure they shipped the correct 70-200, since there are 3 different ones, and to make sure it didn't make any broken glass sounds when I shook it. She said I shouldn't have opened it. She keeps saying she is going to send it back because I opened the brown shipping box. She likes to torcher me I think!!! Since 2/3 of the cost is coming from my new lens fund, I think I'm entitled to a peek don't you??

I have two solutions, the first is my favorite.

1: swap places with me, I am sure you will not have to wait for a 70-200 L IS here because there are none in our house. I will gladly face the consequences of my offer.

2: take out the lens, put a brick in the box and go out and take pictures. Let her wrap it in for xmax and have a good laugh when you unwrap it.

Well I can't say I am feeling with you because I don't think your fate is that bad but still good luck,

Regards,
Paul.

excuse me for my english

I think you should wait until she's gone, open it up and shoot some pics with it.

Make her a nice x-mas card out of one of the pics you shot and give it to her for x-mas.

Then, if you want to measure the size of your mail genetalia, tell her after she opens the card what you did.

As you can probably tell, I'm single. LOL

It's my first white lens, she would notice it stuck on my 10D.

Your right, I'm just getting itchy to get my hands on it.

The 1st part isn't such a bad idea.
The 2nd part she keeps for me in a jar.

Just to make sure it's okidoki. There is always the chance of a bad-new-lens.

Of course, you should tell your wife it will take at least 3-5 days to properly test, just to ensure you don't need to return for a replacment....

Most of the mail-order houses have a 15-day return period. I would at least test it out for 10 minutes and stick it back in the box -- not to "play" with it, but to make sure everything's working OK. If it's not working right after the grace-period, you'll be returning it to Canon for warranty work the day after Christmas. smirk

That I got a full 1D kit for Christmas, but my wife let me get it a few weeks ago so I could master it before the holidays.

I was just shuffling things around in the backpack this morning, trying to find a home for everything.

Enjoy it (when you can).

I have the 70-200 IS, a not a single problem with it. Bad-news-lens is an unfortunate possibility, this is why we order from trusted companies like B&H. I saw a few places selling the 24-70 lens I recently ordered, some significatly cheaper than B&H. Maybe I worry too much, but I trust B&H and few other places, I don't mind paying a bit extra for some peace-of-mind.

That said, I would be shocked if that 70-200 has any problems.

Here's my suggestion: take an empty box, wrapp & label and put it under Xmas tree.
Then mount lens and run like a fire ;-)...

It worked with my wife for my Fisheye... maybe it will work for you(r wife) too :-).

Regards,
Bine.

Cut a hole in the toe and cover it with a black dress sock - you may want to pierce the fabric so a finger can reach the zoom ring also.

BTW my christmas lens is black and my wife was just a little more that peaved that I had been using it for the last week with impunity - so I put my kit lens in the new lens box and let her wrap that. No one will be the wiser and at least christmas eve pick will not need a flash indoors.

O/T is anyone actually considering cutting out the upc code off the box for the paltry canon rebate? If I ever dispose of the rebated lens(es) I certainly see this as a potential problem for the purchaser.
