For the past few weeks I have had my heart set on purchasing a CP5700 over Christmas break. I have been getting quite excited about it. Been looking up all sorts of accessories and what not.

Then today, a friend of mine, Instant Messages me and offer to sell me his used D1 slr for "the same price as a new cp 5700".

Whoa is me. :-[

Just thought I'd share. Whoohoo for my first thread.

... it IS a tough decision. Now is that "whoa is me" as in "I'm coming to a stop, not going forward" or it is "woe is me" as in "what the am I going to do now??" LOL

The 5700 opens you up from macro to landscape in a second, no lenses to sort out, no CCD to keep clean, no piggy bank to get smashed when you want another lens. Then again, will you be totally satisfied with the D1? You have to look at your uses of a camera and then pick your battle. Bummer of a decision, isn't it! LOL Oh one thing, WHY is he getting rid of it, if he's upgrading, it might mean that eventually you'll be dissatisfied too? Just food for thoughts...

It is the "what the am I going to do" hehe.

He is getting rid of it because his main purpose for buying the camera was to take photographs at paintball tournaments. Being a big paintballer himself... he'd go to all these tournaments, take a butt load of pictures, and then sell them to paintball magazines. He got the camera used a few years ago, and had the camera, and two lenses paid for after only a couple of times selling pictures from the tournaments. His work has been published in a couple of magazines and what not. He started college this year and does not really have the time to go to the tournaments anymore, so the camera has been sitting in his room collecting dust. He knew I was in the market for something digital so he offered it. I don't believe he has any intention of upgrading right now... possibly in the future though.

The thing is, I have a Nikon film SLR... so I've got a couple of pretty nice lenses all ready... 80-200 2.8, 50 1.8, and probably a couple more on the way. I love the feel of an big heavy SLR. But, at the same time I really like the 5700 and all the things it can do..... sigh.

Mark,

It's up to you of course, but if it was me (and I would be willing to deal with the bulk), and with the good lenses you already have, it would be a no-brainer. Even if money was tight (I assume you are a student given your email address). Either sell the 5700 or scrape a bit to afford the D1, you know, a movie ticket here, eating out there, maybe work a few more hours... pretty soon it adds up! :-)

Good luck with your decision.

Yea, I'm gonna have to decide. I've got a few weeks.... I have not bought the 5700 yet, and he is going on a trip over Christmas break and doesn't want to sell it until after he comes back. So, I've got a few weeks to decide what I'm gonna do.

If I were you, I would consider this offer seriously IF the camera is a D1h. If it is a D1, I would pass this offer because D1 is a two-generation old camera. Well, two-generation old is not an issue for film cameras. It IS a problem for digicams because of the "age" of electronic circuit and the first generation capability of DSLR design.

Yes, I agree. That was part of my tought process as well. The D1 is rather old camera. Technology has improved/changed a lot since it's release.

I believe I have decided to stick to the CP5700 and perhaps upgrade in a few years, when I'm not as much of a poor college student.

Ah! I must have my DSLRs all confused. I thought it was a D1X. Sorry about that... I think CK is right, and if you pick the 5700, it will give you plenty of satisfaction for some time. The 5700 is a very good value now, in the face of its competition from other brands as well as a possible replacement that Nikon could announce at PMA in February.

Anyway, I love mine, for what it's worth!

The 5700 is garbage compared to the Canon 300D (I have both).
Nikon is just following Canon.
Eventually, both the 5700 and Canon 300D will become garbage. :-) By the way, have you used the 5700 extensively? I'd really like to know the pros and cons of 5700 vs. 300D If you can offer an in-depth comparison, I would appreciate your work very much.

Yes, I have been using the 5700 for over one year. I have moved on to a 300D because (from a price perspective) it is now the same cost as a 5700, but it has the fantastic Canon 6 MP sensor. There is no reason to buy a camera such as the 5700 today when the 300D is available for virtually the same price. Eventually, Nikon will play catch-up with the D70. It seems to me that Nikon has become a follower, not a leader. That is one of the reasons I am no longer a Nikon customer.

Interesting point. One problem is that people who buy cameras may not depend on the initial cost. They have other concerns such as future expansion, costs of lenses, convenience, size, weight, etc. If price is the only factor, I may very well agree with you. Unfortunately, it is not always the case.

In my 20+ professional photographic career, I believe I saw enough arguments like that. Nikon has been a slow moving company, Canon has the tendency to put out many products to saturate the market, and Minolta has the capability of adding the most current stuffs to their camera and screwing up their achievement. In the past 20+ years, when company X released something, there were always people saying company Y amd Z can only catch-up. Then, a few months or a year later, when company Y released something even more interesting, the same group of people would say "hey, company X and Z were playing catch-up." If we look at any moment of camera/lens history, you will see that this cycle appear over and over, and that a company never had the chance to lead the trend for a very time. The evolution of camera and lens development IS a essentially a catch-up game.
That is one of the reasons I am no longer a Nikon customer.
Then, happy shooting with Canon.
