A thought about DSLR's and NTF...

Hmmmm.... Speaking as one of the posters that has dropped off begun to lurk recently I might post my thoughts. I didn't drop off because of the number DSLR posts but did feel they were out of place. More to the point I rarely get comments apart from 2 posters (thanks for the feedback Marek and Sheila). I don't even know what happened my my last pic that I posted - gone? Not that it worries me that much as I seemed to be ignored largely and will continue to post infrequently regardless.

There seems to be a core group that drives this forum. It is this group who are mainly buying DSLR's as well. To allow them to continue posting in here will ultimately see this become a DSLR 2 forum since they generate the majority of the threads. If they were to go somewhere else or to another forum would NTF die? Nope! There will be plenty more where they came from. Jarrell is not irreplacable and from what I've heard about the DSLR forums it sounds like they could use him there. Of course he's always welcome to talk about his 5700 here.

Which brings me to my next point. Most of the new DSLR buyers still have their coolpixes. Are they going to stop using them? Of course not! Why lug around a DSLR when you've got a coolpix? They'll have plenty of reason to visit and chat still so it's not like they're gone forever - just as long as they stick to coolpix talk. It's like growing up and leaving home. NTF isn't daycare for DSLR owners too frightened to post anywhere else. It's not even their forum. Phil Askey sets the rules and we should abide by them.

Are those moving from Coolpix, with the new DSLR uncomfortable on the current SLR site?

I've been reading and watching for the past two days as this topic has exploded in NTFville and divided the community into two distinct camps.

I've also gone over to the Nikon DSLR forum and read the wonderful reception that Jarrell is receiving over there.

A lot of good points have been made on both sides. Your articulate and often humorous posts have been interesting to read. But there can be no doubt about one point: This thread has changed NTF once and for all and there is no going back.

A rift has been opened here, for better or for worse. Here's hoping that if heals quickly and we can all get back to the thing we love the most: Discussing digital photography.

occurred when the D100s arrived in the hands of the NTFers.

It's like having a Volkswagen Beetle Club and the senior members start getting Porsches. Yeah, they're somewhat related, but the issues are very different.

Sadly, I won't have a Porsche for quite a while...

I don't post here much due to time constraints right now, but I do read here as much as I can to try to keep up and learn. Just my own humble opinion is that this is the Nikon Talk Forum and everyone with a Nikon digital, even DSLR's, should be welcome here. But I think the people posting with the D100's should hopefully keep their subjects of interest to those of us without DSLR's. But even if they don't, it's OK with me.

I am newer to photography than most of you and I do find photos very helpful to me. Often the photos are tied to explanations of camera technique and that has helped me so much. So I would not mind at all seeing photos taken with DSLR's so I can see how they compare to what the rest of us have and whether I would someday want to move up to one (more money and more photography experience would be necessary, of course).

And I always enjoy Jarrell's posts, Uncle Frank's, Bud Guinn, Backdoctor, Thomas Bauer, Dr. Shene, Peter iNova, Mike Wright, Muriel, and all of the rest of you!

Weren't you yelling a me a few hours ago for keeping this thread alive?

The sooner it fades out, the sooner the healing will begin.

And despite your sarcastic rejoinder, I still admire your pirate logo :-p.
