trying to kill the time waiting for my 10D delivery, I wonder how much faster the autofocus of this camera will be compared to my previous digicams (ixus, s45, dimage A1)

so please, make the wait even more unbearable by commenting :)

It's fast. REAL fast. Especially if room lighting is bright, or you have an external flash or ST-E2 due to the AF assist lamp. I would estimate that if I pointed the camera at some random object with my 28-135 or 70-200 lens, that it would focus in 1/4 to 1/2 second tops.

By comparison, my Fuji 4900 Zoom, which by most accounts takes excellent pictures and autofocuses accurately every times, can take as long as 2-3 seconds to focus if going from very close to very far objects.

I went from a Powershot G3 to the 10D, and there is a big difference. The G3, while a great camera, sometimes took a good 3 or 4 seconds to focus with difficult subjects. The 10D would take probably 0.5 second with the same subject.

Canon EOS 1D, D60
Canon EF 50mm F1.8, EF 28-135mm IS
Sigma 300mm F2.8 + 70-200 F2.8
Sigma 1.4x and 2x Tele-Converters

Is that the AF speed is also dependent on the particular lens being used. For example, my 28-70L f/2.8 is tons faster than my 75-300 f/4-5.6 IS.

But rest assured, even the slowest of the EOS lenses will be tons faster than what you're used to.

Any DSLR beats unexposed film.

It depends on the lens and on how much travel is required to get in focus. But even a lens like the Sigma 70 300 APO that has a reputation for slow focus is a big step up from a PRO 90. In the case where it is far from focus you do notice the time that it takes to get in focus. You can also have problems because you can't see the target and you don't get enough contrast in any of the focus points for the camera to be able to focus. But even with that lens when you are anywhere close to the focus point, focusing is almost instantaneous.

will be the 28/135 for starters. as long as the 10D focusses more quickly than my Dimage A1 so I can finally catch some pictures of my dog playing around in the garden catching stuff or kids playing and snapping them at the right time, I'll be happy

I lost too many shots with my previous digicams only because the focus was just a fraction too slow to get THE moment, always seemed to get A moment. the Dimage A1 was pretty fast focussing though, just not fast enough to my liking (in some situations)
