I wonder if I'd be gaining anything over the 80-200 2.8 ED. Maybe weight, a little speed but maybe not worth the upgrade?

Georg,

I am VERY interested in the 85 1.4 but I have two things working aginst me - no ebay feedback (I've never bought or sold through ebay) and I'm in Toronto. I see that this double disqualifies me ...

Too bad, I could give that lens a very good home...

The 85 1.4 is a very cool lens; it's imaging attributes are well described on dpreview. The 80-200 is no doubt a great lens too, maybe very close in terms of imaging abilities, but you will take the 85 1.4 places where you just wouldn't lug the big zoom. As the saying goes, the best picture is made by the camera that that you have with you. The Nikon 200 zooms really are terrific, but you won't be disappointed with the 84 1.4.

Yep, the bokeh is major nice.

I've seen some great non-portrait photos from the 85 1.4. On a D100 you can get some good photos of distant objects on the street, but for but for head and shoulder shots, wow! Portraits with the 85 1.4 are deluxe in all respects. And the lens just handles nice; nothing against big zooms, but this lens is a pleasure to work with.

Okay, I embarrassed myself. After I posted here, I read all the responses that talk about how great the lens is. I hadn't used it in a while. Then I went back to my PC and looked over some of the photos I'd taken with it, and yes, they're outstanding, with a special quality I just don't get with other lenses. So I'm sorry. Egg on my face. I'm keeping the lens. I love it -- and my D1X. I'll go home now.

Wow! The exchange that Yada and I had made you change your mind about dumping your Nikon gear? Darn, I really wanted that lens!! Oh well, welcome back :)

No wonder I can't find a pristine 85mm f1.4 on the used lens market...

Hey, sorry if I influenced the outcome; I figured it was just a matter of a person (George) moving from Nikon to Canon with an auction on eBay, If anything, I was trying to encourage DoF to consider buying the lens - I thought that would be good for both of you; I was even thinking about suggesting George consider selling to a Canadian buyer since they are like brothers/sisters polictically speaking. Sorry if I mucked it up - but it is a very nice lens. Happy DP to both of you.
  • DOF, my guess is that even when the 85 1.4 sells used it still goes for several hundred $; for not too much more you could buy one brand new - and they seem to hold their value :)
  • George, stick in the Nikon camp, and go easy on Canadians, eh? :)

DoF,

Your best bet for an 85 1.4D is from Cameta Camera on eBay for a Nikon reps lens. It's a US lens and comes with a one year warranty plus the first 90 days are covered by Nikon. They usually do a BuyItNow for $799.00 but they don't last very long. I got one from them and I have been keeping my eyes peeled for the AFS 300 4. They come looking brand new including a the stuff a new one has from Nikon.

I have been shooting some birds in a local sanctuary and it's a lot of fun. I think I may have to hold on to my 80-400VR for a while longer. There seems to be a flood of them on eBay and I was only offered $835.00. It is a good lens and plus it's faster on the D2H so it's not so bad. I have the 70-200VR plus a 1.4TC so I only need the 80-400 for 300-400 which is it's weekest length. I almost got a 500 4 on eBay for $3500 which would have changed my whole view.
