Just got my G5 and was wondering about what case to get. It would room to carry a few extras (CF card, extra battery). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

P.S. I really enjoy this camera. I sent the A80 back because I wanted more features - faster lens, remote and bigger lcd. However, the A80 was a great camera as well. I am learning that Canon makes a great product.

I have a Canon G2. I leave the Lensmate on the camera. A Lowepro Nova Mini holds the camera, filters, 420ex, CF cards and a couple of other goodies. It is small, inexpensive ~$30 and has belt loops

I agree, Canon makes good products. I have a 33 year old FTb that proves it.

My G5 fits perfectly in a Lowepro TX200. 3 separate compartments
for flash cards, lens cleaning stuff, straps, remote, etc.

Thank you for the responses. It looks like Lowepro is the brand to go with. I'll look at all of your suggestions and pick the one right for me. After buying the G5, I don't have much money left for lens adapter and 420 flash etc. So I will probably get something now that will be big enough to hold these items when I can afford them later.

I second that. I too, have the Nova Mini from Loweprp and am very pleased with it. I can carry the following items:

Camera - G3
Lens adapter
Wide angle lens
Tele lens
Macro lens
Table tripod
Spare battery
Spare CF card
Remote
Cleaning cloth
USB cable
Charger + Cable
AV cable

That's a good idea so you don't end up needing a new bag later -- like me. :-) Depending on what you think you'll do, I suggest getting a bag that'll fit the G5 w/ adapter attached, the 420ex flash and either a tele or wide converter w/ adapter attached besides whatever little items.

For something like that, I can recommend the Tamrac Velocity 5. I've checked out the various Lowepro's, and they just don't fit quite that much w/ the same ease-of-access, especially if you want to store a large-ish wide converter like the Canon 0.7x or the Oly ones. With the Tamrac, I find that I can even keep the 420ex attached at all times, which I do. :-) And it offers a waistbelt that could be useful on occasion though the bag is a bit too tall to keep in front unless you're a tall/big guy.

I only use the bag w/ 1 divider for the main compartment, instead of 2 dividers, so 1 side stores my Canon 0.7x lens + adapter while the other has my G3 pointing downward w/ a few small items below, eg. omnibounce. When I use the wide lens extensively, I just flip things around for similar results though I do need a hood hat (Optech) to keep the flimsy lens cap on the wide lens as much as possible. The bag also has a notch on each side for attaching small pouches/cases for additional stuff -- I attach a Lowepro DRes-25 to hold my Canon tele + adapter.

Hmmm... Maybe you should just get the Lowepro DRes-25 first since it's not that expensive, and then see where you'll go w/ accessories before going bigger. I personally would not be happy w/ the Lowepro Nova series or DRes series for what I have. The Linx series might work size-wise, but I really didn't like the loud, cheezy "life-style" design.

As usual, YMMV + caveat emptor.

This is a point well taken and I will look at the Tamrac. I do see a 420 ex in my near future but that will probably be all for a while. I will probably not get into other lenses or lensmate adapter (unless I am looking for somewhere else to live - my wife would kick me out at this point). I will have: G5, 420 EX (hoping), extra CF card, compact tripod, battery and various cords that come with camera. Would the Tamrac be too big for my needs or would the Lowepro be sufficient for these items. I have seen your posts on this forum and your pics (very nice by the way) and would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

Get a bag - any bag you like - which doesn't scream "cameras!" and organize its interior using Domke Wraps, Domke or Tenba dividers and velcro strips. Nothing beats the level of customization when you "roll your own."

Contributor Badbatz has a valid point; one that I follow. I have an old Sundog shoulder bag, not much bigger than a paperback book. It's padded main compartment holds my G5 perfectly, and it has a couple of smaller pockets that hold extra CFC's, etc. It could be anything - least of all a conspicuous camera bag.

I originally bought the Tamrac Velocity 5, and now, I also have the Velocity 7.

Both are very good bags.

I use the Velocity 5 for general parties, and places where I can leave the camera bag alone (wedding, friend's party, etc)

I use the Velociity 7 for just about everything else, esp for on-the-go.

It's messenger type bag, and I like not having to remove it when I want to take the camera out.

It fits:
-- G3 with lensmate adapter
-- 420ex flash
-- Canon teleconverter
-- minipod
-- extra CF / filters / batteries
-- omni bounce

The Velocity 7 LOOKS small when you get it, but comfortably fits about everything listed. I looked at the Velociity 9, and it's HUGE! If I were to carry more than 1 camera + huge amounts of accessories, I'd probaby use that instead.

I use the Lowepro D-Res 200 AW for my G5.

The camera fits snugly in the compartment. The zippered rear compartment is large enough for 3 memory cards, my remote, my AV cables for connecting to the grandparents' television and my extra battery.

It also has a hidden rain hood for added protection when you're caught in the elements by surprise.

If you're pretty sure you won't add any lens converters, then a Lowepro Nova 1 or Mini is probably good. Also, you might consider the Lowepro DRes 220 or maybe even the Linx 120. Depends on whether you will want to always keep a lens adapter on the camera for protection, etc. No need for Velocity 5 (or 7) if you won't have extra lenses.

You can check out all these bags on Lowepro's web site, and buy just about any of them from B&H, if you want to buy online (or is in NYC).

And oh, thanks for the kind words about my photos...

For a long while, I would carry my G3 inside a Lowepro DRes 30 sitting inside my moderate size messenger bag along w/ 420ex flash. Inconspicuous.
