I am a long time Mac user, but sadly am very new to Panther. (1 day) I got a new 20" iMac to replace my old beige G3. I plan to keep the G3 around as a back-up storage machine. It has a 120gb drive in it so I would like to keep two copies of everything (Prior to DVD back-up.)

I have no idea how to access the old G3 via ethernet cross-over cable. Can I? or is OS9.2 not going to play well with OSX? I can seet the iMac from the G3 in the chooser, but I can't get in. The iMac doesn't even recognize the G3. I have read that I can use a firewire cable to mount the G3 as a removeable disk, but I am not sure how this is accomplished. Is it faster?

I hope there is an easy explanation for what I am doing wrong.

File sharing can sometimes be a little tricky.

If you do have firewire on your G3 you can plug a cable into each while the G3 is off, press the power button, and after the chime, press and hold the t key. The G3 should mount on the new iMac.

I have to say also that I don't recall if target disk mode is supported on older models.

Thanks.

I am going to try that the G3 is running 9.2.2, and it has firewire through a PCI card. I won't hold my breath, but I am hoping for this to work.

Target disk booting may work, but I think it is not supported on anything as old as a beige G3. However you should be able to share files over an ethernet cable without a problem.

1. Enable file sharing on both computers.

2. Plug in an ethernet cable. It doesn't have to be crossover since OSX is smart enough to figure out what you are trying to do.
3. Restart both computers.
4. Press cmmd+K on the iMac and your G3 should appear as a networked computer.

You should now be able to connect to the G3 without a problem. I have done the same thing with an almost identical setup (beige G3 and 17" iMac) and it works flawlessly. Once you get it figured out it won't be a problem to maintain... and it is a great idea to have the G3 remain as an network storage space.

Hope that helps,
Brad.

Thanks!

I haven't tried either yet, however I am also concerned about transfer speed. Which would be faster? firewire or ethernet? I also have a key lime (I know, I know) ibook that I need to transfer to and from occasionally. Is there a lot more to using a hub vs. a single cable?

Firewire (400 mbps) is faster than ethernet on your iMac(100 mbps). Recent and current PowerBooks and PowerMacs have gigabit ethernet(1000 mbps).

since the beige G3 will be the bottleneck you could just buy a 40 dollar firewire enclosure for the 120gb hard drive that is currently in the beige G3. it would be alot easier and would add the benefit of portability. the only drawback is that you would lose the G3 as a functional machine...

just a thought.

OK, this is my experience with Ethernetting an OLD 9600/200 (well it's upgraded to a G3, but it's still older than your beige G3) running Mac OS 9.1:

Not a problem!

Just turn on filesharing on the G3, add an user unless you log in as owner.

We have a whole network with both Mac's and PC's so all machines have their own IP-addresses, which makes things easier of course. But no problem. I can reach all my stuff from my old machine from my G4 no problem.

Joel

Hi Joel,
Using a hub is no more hassle than using a single cable. You plug in the hub and your cables and all your machines ought to be recognized. Asanté Friendlynet hubs are normally quite reliable and don't need a driver

Well, I experienced the same thing when I first got into System X. You can access the old G3 with the imac but not the other way around. There is a convoluted way to make it work. I used it for a while but soon gave up and just installed X in the backup machine. The problem is that with System X you can have ethernet and your internet network active at the same time, while you can't in 9 and older. If you feel you are close make sure you have Appletalk active and have your backup machine set to built in ethernet not PPP. That will get you going one way.

I wish I had it still in my memory, because I could tell you the processes step by step if I did. I used to know it that well.
