I was just wondering about the guy behind dpreview, and how he made it all happen. It seems that when I come across a rare post where he replies it is almost like everyone shuts up and listens - like some sort of a higher power is speaking (well, I guess he is - he IS the moderator ;) I have come to quite admire this man that I really know nothing about.

So who this Phil Askey legend? Any idea how old he is? Obviously he is very knowledgeable at photography and computer programming all at once - how did he learn all of this? I take it he must have some sort of a background in programming?

Also, I have noticed that he rarely posts here in the Canon SLR forum... usually in the Olympus and Open forums I think. Feel left out? ;) I wonder what camera he calls his own? I have a feeling it is not a cell phone cam.

He must have one heck of a cool job - testing out the coolest new toys - I don't know what kind of a living you would make doing this, but it must be fun some times ;)

Just curious...

That cool job is called measurbation. LOL Basically, it's measuring all kinds of parameters of different cameras. Only God can sustain 24/7/365 measurbation for so long time.

And don't ask me who's Goddess. Visit 300D forum ;)

This is just broad speculation. I wonder if this is him (photo in the G2 gallery). You will need to press the Back button on your browser to return here.

We see this lady a lot in the galleries, could it be his partner?

Hope nobody is offended if I am wrong.

There was a picture of Phil floating around the forums 3 or 4 years ago.....I don't think the pic you linked is him unless he's put on a few pounds since then.

This has been discussed before, in "Open Talk". Phil claims that's
not him. He says it's a friend.

That's Joanna. If you start looking at the copyrights for the sample
photos for more of the newer "consumer oriented" cameras,
you'll sometime the photographer is Joanna, not Phil.

As far as I know, Joanna is Phil's wife.

You can see his fingers on most of the camera reviews! haha

IMO he's not a real programmer because he uses ASP... cough blechk heave ... slow, buggy, craaaap but graphic IDE for newbies.

i'd love to see these forums re-coded without the MS bloatware, but that ain't gonna happen. sigh.

oh, and enough of this bizarre primary-school type worship of phil... very disturbing

Whether or not he's "a real programmer" isn't really of that much
importance, I'd say.

I have been supporting myself for the last 17 years with computer
programming, and I really don't think any of it is truly, high level,
rocket science. It's really not that hard to learn, or do. Unless, maybe,
you are rocket scientist that writes software to use in their work.

But what Phil has done is create a business doing something he
truly enjoys. Reviewing the cameras, I'd guess, is the part he
would like best. But running the site, in general, is probably a bit
of fun too. And it's "his business", he doesn't have some boss
above him telling him what all the final decisions will be.

I respect him very much for all that.

The fact that you don't see all that, Warren, and instead have chosen
to criticize Phil's business, merely because it's written using ASP, makes
me wonder how smart you are. Sorry, but creating the business is a
lot more impressive than being "a real programmer", in my opinion.

Well, why not, Warren ? What are you doing that's so important
that you don't have time to set up some digital photography Web
site using the programming language of your choice ? Let's see you
create a site as popular as this one, wonder boy.

..because you make YOURSELF look like the tit! This is probably the most successful photo forum and he's managed to do it with "slow, buggy craaap but graphic IDE for Newbies" programming language. That's quite clever in my book.

I hope that was irony... ASP is actually pretty compentent nowadays for a web-scripting language...

everything is not good just because it's programmed in assembler or cobol :)
