Is there such thing as a TRAVEL Monopod?

My guess is I need it to extend at least 5 feet.

I am thinking that a Monopod is better to travel with, because of the one pole?
I need something LIGHT and that can FIT in my carry on bag.

I got a Vanguard VGT-4 from buy.com (don't know if they still have them) for $14.95 + about $5 shipping.

Collapsed it is just under 23 inches, is very well made, has a hand grip to use as a hiking pole, drop-down foot extension to use as a stabilizer (doesn't stabilize like a good tripod), and a nice quick release with a section to mount on the camera.

It is very light and has three sections with nice section locks. It extends to 56 inches max which is a little under 5 feet. I really like mine.

HG,

Here's one option. It's a portable tripod that converts to a monopod. I've never seen one in person, just from the info on the web.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=14703&is=REG

This one looks like a nice compact mono-pod.

I've got this combination table-top tri-pod and micro mono-pod. Pretty unstable as a monopod, but it would work in a pinch. (it came as part of a bundle or I don't think I would have purchased it.)

This is my personal favorite. I don't have it yet, but as soon as I loose my $10 walmart mono-pod, this is the one I'll probably replace it with. Not the most expensive, but it looks like a good value and folds down to less than two feet.

I have been using this one for the past year and love it! It has been used and was recommended to me by several members of the board. It used to be sold by Ritz camera under their name but they no longer carry it. There are many sources, including ebay, if you do a net search for Vanguard Monopod. It usually sells for around $30.

I like the quick release plate; 3-way head; and the folding foot brace at the bottom. Very sturdy and lightweight.

That one would work a little bit better than my VGT 4, as I noticed with mine that it is pretty rigid getting the camera tilt right. Yours is twice as much and has a little more bulk, but I think overall it would work better. I'll keep mine though. I'm happy with it. It sure helps getting sharper pictures, even when subjects aren't moving.

Randy,
How do you use the Pan head?

Like this one:

Bogan 3006 Black Monopod … It might be smaller and lighter … but, does not have the 3-way pan head.
Is there a advantage / use … for the pan head ?
Have not used … but, thought you could just turn on the Mono leg?

They look the same except for the head. The tilt helps a lot when composing a photo vertically.

HG,

I've not seen it in any color but the dark grey...it's an attractive color and isn't flashy like bare aluminum.

As I mentioned to Shudderbug, the tilt head is great for taking vertically-oriented pictures.

It folds up to a nice size and could double as a Billy Club if you ever needed it!!! :))

unless you're positive about what types of shots you are 'only' going to shoot. a monopod will pretty much stow away in amongst the tripod legs and the extra weight as far as i'm concerned is worth the extra range of shooting. a monopod is great for close quarter shots -no legs for moving peolpe to stumble over. indoor -low(er) light shots-. however the best way to shoot panos, and lanscapes -bracket exposures- is to have a tripod.

Consider gitzo 1028.. It weights under 800 grams, fits inside normal school bag or shoulder bag and is unbelievably rigid for the size. I'v compared it directly against my larger tripod, gitzo's 2.2kg explorer, and the difference in rigidity is suprisingly small.

It's only 110cm without extending center column, but when using camera with flip-up lcd screen the height is not a problem really.
