in nyc's grand central terminal, the politicians and bureaucrats figured out a long time ago that they couldn't stop performers from setting up and playing for donations...as a matter of fact they actually did seriously try to stop them at one point! i'm glad that attempt failed. so now, there's an "officially sponsored" program for music underground, in grand central terminal and the nyc subway system. this cool cat was playing yesterday when i went into the station for my lunch break. he was really very good.

taken with my sony f717, this is indoors, underground, and horrible lighting (really not much at all!). 1/30th sec, handheld (pulling down hard on the neckstrap and bracing the camera against my body), f2.1, iso 200. i converted to b&w because that's the way i felt listening to this fellow - he was sort of playing some real sad jazz dirges -- almost funereal or ode-like.

by the way - if you'd like to see some more, my collection of grand central photographs is now in one gallery here:

Andy,

I really like this photo. I can almost hear the music. I think B&W suits it perfectly.

And it's really wonderful, you did it B&W!
Spasibo!

Sorry for delay with the answer - Chehov - small town near Moscow ( 40 km). It started its history in 1956 - the year I was born!

My city of Voronezh is 500 km from Moscow. Tell me, where you will be there - maybe we'll have a chance to meet!

Great photo. Sometimes (often actually) B&W will make a poorly lit color shot look great. This would not be nearly as good in color I think. Sad Jazz (call it blues maybe :-) ) calls out of B&W. You hit the mood.

Very nice picture, Andy!

I think you're really good in capturing everyday urban life, and making it look nice!

Way to go!

a very nice picture, indeed. It brought back memories; I used to enjoy listening jazz guitarrists back in the 70's when I lived in the States.
