*** Sign the petition - Request better firmware from Canon ***

as long as the steering turn right when you want it to turn right..now it turns left sometimes.
Suffice to say: If I bought a Camaro and the advertising said "you
can steer it left and right" and I then found out that I can only
steer to the left when I'm in fourth gear. Then I would complain
about the Camaro, not buy a Corvette...

he will be the first in line to download the firmware patch if Canon ever provide one.. all those who complain WILL install the firmware patch if Canon fix the AI focus.

if that happen it everybody will be happy about it.
Jeeezzzzz man cool down, who's complaining here? The only one I
hear complaining is you. Philip just initiated a great formal and
structured way to provide some feedback to Canon, they should be
happy with that even if they decide not to follow up on it. It all
depends on whether you see the issue as a lack of functionality or
a flaw. I have the opinion they created a flaw by reducing the
functionality too much and maybe they didn't even forsee this. I
know my company would be happy with that feedback so they could
decide to act on it or not. You can buy a house and be happy with
it but still ask the builder to fix a leaking roof or fix a
radiator that doesn't work.

Joris
Why not start another petition to get chevy to give me a free
upgrade to my Camaro and turn it into a Corvette! I say if your not
happy with the 300D then sell it and quit complaining!!
I've put together this web based petition, that you are welcome to
sign if you want:

well..he did mention that there was much discussions aout this..so there was a real concern..his evaluation of not being a problem in 95% of the case was based on what? what tests?

the problem is that many people unfortunatly find themselves in that 5% braket too often.
It's a decent camera, but it does not perform to Canon's standards,
nor does it perform as good as Phil said it would in his review. GC

Agreed...I already sent them a 2 pages letters...they did not reply yet.

surely it woudl have more punch if a lot of people would do the same.
I like it, I signed it. But individual letters to Canon would get
their attention more, so I encourage everyone to also send personal
letters or emails to Canon expressing your particular
issues/concerns. I did.

do they ever dix their bugs then?

not totaly pointless...
Canon NEVER add functionality to their cameras FULL STOP uness you
count Pict-Bridge which was only added to help sell printers - if
they did, the D60, 1D and 1DS would have had working E-TTL which
meters from a proper sized area as opposed to a pinhead, the 1D
would have got image zooming and the 1DS better image zooming and
whole host of other irritating things in all the previous DSLRs ..

Petitioning to add features to the 300D is pointless, it'll get you
no where and if they did add all the 10D firmware features, all
they'd get would be a lot less 10D sales and a petition from 10D
owners asking for an EF-S retrofit and money back !.

Heck they may even do a firmware update for the Film rebels to add
the features missing which the respective elans had also!. You got
a top notch DSLR for LESS than the price of a Crappy Minolta A1 at
the time of launch and still cheaper than the vapourware Sony 8Mp
Webcam F828 - Be HAPPY or get a 10D

The only reason there are that many names on the list is because people are getting friends/family/co-workers to sign it to make it grow. At least 30% of those people have no idea what a digital rebel is.
Phil, this make a LOT of sense ! Why not putting a checkbox,
"owner" or "potential buyer if updated" ? Just put the actual list
as owner, and wait and see ;-)
Also clean some kids who have put names like gimmegimmegimme ....

Kib
Hi Kib!

Cleaned out som kids/nikon-trolls whatever...

I just slapped the form-list-thing together in good old perl-script
in a haste, today, but did'nt expect such a rush to sign the
list... :-D or to abuse it :- .

Programmed a "easy remove from list" function this evening on
account of those "kids"... ;-)

I like the idea with "potential buyer", but i'll have to give it a
rest for a couple of days now, let's get back to it some time next
week.

Looking promising though.. so far the list has been signed by 251
persons.

Would be really fun if it moves towards a thousand...

If anyone can find product manager of 300d then that would be great
start otherwise they'll all end up at different country offices on
a smaller scale.

If someone can find the best contact and we all agree to send to
same place I'll definitely send.
Hello David!

Before I send the petition to Canon I will bring thought like yours up for discussion: To which people at Canon should we send it (i think we should send it to several different people in different countries...)

Should we send it as a group or should we get some sort a mass-mailing going (the same message coming from each and every one who signed the petition...). After all you all made an individual effort in signing...

But I will get back to all of this later in a new thread!

Philip

Hi Todd!

Have you spoken to all of them already? (Boy you're good at looking people up on the net! Could you look some Canon bosses up for me?)

How nice of them to sign then :-) having no idea what they are talking about and all...

Philip

what's your tric? how do you make it kick in on moving subjects like flying birds? I have been trying over and over to do this..no success for servo.

tell me your tric please....if you have one.
For what it's worth, I find it works like it should.

But if I want the additional features of the higher-end camera, I'm
going to pony up and pay the difference for the better camera. If
you want 10D features, you've got to get the 10D. It's that simple.
Sorry, but AIservo is definitely a bug. It works sometimes like you
want, sometimes not. simply because it can't know if you want to
reframe or follow this bird. It doesn't works like it should
(accuraltely kick in or not) so it IS a bug.

they are. I had a different 300d the past weekend and it was definitly more sensitive to kick in. Mine almost never kick in..only very rarely.
To me, it's not a matter of how sensitive AI Focus is, but rather
that it is impossible for an algorithm to guess the type of AF mode
the user wants to use in every situation. I get this problem
about 1 in 20 or 25 shots when AI Servo kicks in while recomposing.
That's a small fraction, yes, but it is always in the back of my
mind when shooting; and that takes away from what I should be
concentrating on... making the photo.

Some folks also have the opposite problem, where they're can't get
AI Servo to kick in when they want it to.

Also, I don't know about KiboOst, I love my camera dispite this
annoyance. And lots of people probably feel the same way. But
that's not to say we don't want a better solution to our problem.
But isn't it time to change your tag line if you're having so big
problems with your camera?

--jalle
Just do a test : focus on something, and move the camera. Do it
four times, folowing exactly the same way. You will get one shot
two times, aiservo two times. This works as expected ? I don't
think so...

yes it is still written in their brochure! they did not remove that and it is clearly written:

"Additional advanced exposure controls include AE Lock, FE Lock and Auto
Exposure Bracketing, which records 3 consecutive exposures with
one shot to make sure you get the effect you want. "

it is still in their web site brochure that you can download here:

http://www.canoneos.com/digitalrebel/download/digitalrebel_bro.pdf

this is misleading.
I understand their point of view, they want to keep their 10D
market, but I assume it could have been done in another way.
Especially the focus-point-weighted metering is a big flaw. Due to
this, you really can get an exposure that isn't one you would
expect from a $1000 camera, or even a $300 one...

I hope they fix that at least, but I doubt it.

Good luck & happy shooting

Dear Philip! I was thinking to do somethig like that long time ago, and I found that probably the best way to make Canon more responsible for relation with us - Send this petition as an OPEN LETTER to publish to all Photography realted magazines and newspapers. I think that they WILL HAVE to publish it if we got a lot of wotes here. At list one of them will do it, I hope ..

Don't know to much about the law, but I think this is something connected to Human Rights.
Maybe I'm wrong, but who knows?
What do you think, everyone?

Piggy
P.S. I'm not a native English speaker also..

Philip:

Just signed the petition. I think this is a positive move. Rather
than just belittling the camera, it shows strong support among
users. These requests on this petition are not unreasonable.

I only hope that many, many users will sign this petition, with it
subsequently being forwarded to Canon.

Just signed pettition, though i doubt it will do any good,I beleave i read in a magazine or this forum, that Canon do not respond to forum post's. !!

To send it to a bunch of photo magz. could be a good step!

The don't have to publish (at least not where I come from) but chances are they just might... Good idea!

The question is: You can't do that after you've sent it to Canon, or can you?

Philip

Didnt anyone research the differences between the 10D and 300D ??

Its on this very sight for crying out loud !

Oh wait, you didnt know what those terms such as "metering mode"
meant, now you do and you wish you had it so lets ask canon to
give it to use for free.

Its a life lesson, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
NOT! I'm not get what I pay for: Canon promice to all "Camera for Everyone can use" and 'Camera you can use right out of the box" Right? I, personally can live without FEC, as I use external Flash, but camera MUST be for everyone without underexposed flash pics in ANY situations!

Also Personally I will NOT trade my Digtal Rebel for 10D even for free - as I WANT small enough camera.. 10D is too big for me, and I think a lot of peoples can say that... even not everyone...
