I usually leave my desktop on without shutting it down. But when I did some extensive video and photoshop sessions, the response time sometimes show a lack. The lacks are all across the board in browsers and other applications like worksheet. When I clicked the command, it took some fraction of a second for the dropdown to show.

I have to reboot to bring back the agility.

Is it normal?

What's causing that?

I find I reboot it about once or twice a week. Sometimes this occurs with a forced Windows update...

In general, it's good to reboot it at least once a week to clear cache, memory leaks, etc.
I have tried scheduling rebooting in the scheduler. But sometimes, it reboot as scheduled but I might have lost my pace on something I was reading the night before that I left it there to continue the next day. So I disabled it and rely on manually booting when I see sluggishness in the response.

Yeah... I have trouble with the scheduler too. Whenever I see the notice that an update is available, I use that manually to reboot.

I also try to reboot before a major day's work with meetings and whatnot...

I tried a shift shutdown vs normal shutdown and there was absolutely no difference between the visuals and the boot times. Just disable the hibernation file using powercg and turn off fast startup in the power plan. You can also check the registry to see if hybrid shutdown is enabled.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Power\ HiberbootEnabled.

And using the shutdown command will bypass hybrid boot. You can create a batch file with the command and put a shortcut on your desktop or taskbar.

All my computers are OFF when not being used. They are also switched OFF from the mains - as is the modem.

There is no reason to leave a computer running 24 hrs a day. Some will say that it prevents power cycle component failures. I worked as a Reliability Engineer for many years and, for consumer desktop computers, this is Not a factor to worry about.
Good to know, thanks.

I turn on and off my computer very frequently, obviously I don't leave it on without a reason. Never had a failure because of that usage pattern.

Glad that's working for you. BTW, are you running Windows 10 or 11?

I restart my home PC once or twice a month. Mostly for updates. I put it to sleep when not in use otherwise.

For my work computer, I reboot maybe once a week. I shutdown at night, with fastboot still enabled, so shutdown it's not the same as a restart, more like hibernate. For a while I was shutting down without fast boot (hold down shift while selecting shutdown), but then it would take too long to reconnect in the morning with our company security and VPN. For home, that might not be an issue, and SHIFT + Shutdown might be a more viable option.

I shut down my laptops when I am not using them. My desktop goes into sleep mode reliably. Laptops are a crapshoot when they goto sleep are they in low power sleep or plugged in sleep modes etc. So I just shut them down. It does no harm.
