If you have the G9II (which I think is an amazing camera) do the software update now. The camera is live the moment you switch the camera on. For those of us who never turned our camera off when birding due to the agonizing startup speed the wait is over. Now if you are taking a break or walking to a new spot and you need or want to save battery power, don't fear startup is amazing.

Good job Panasonic.

Note that this is only true if you've powered on the camera recently. At a certain point it goes into a deeper sleep and takes the same amount of time it used to - around 5 seconds. This is my experience with the new firmware with the S5 II, at least.

Correct. I installed the FW earlier and it was amazing the improvement. And appears several other improvements to explore when time allows.

The G9II always has been slow on first start up and very quick subsequently. So there was no benefit in a firmware update that did not change this.

This deep sleep wake up probably goes through a series of extended checks and to speed this up would need to short circuit this routine. Maybe the deeper thinking could be switched to shut down or could periodically be run when switched off and draining battery in the process. I have more than one brand of camera body that if left unused for a couple of weeks will always have its "freshly charged" battery flattened. The S1 comes to mind and my Canon 5Ds is much the same. My old Ricoh bodies can go months, if not years, and still fire up with most of the battery charge left. When they are switched off - they are truly "off".

Get firmware 2.5 and you'll be amazed at how much faster the first turn on is.

I have to say, I would not have known there was an update to 2.5 unless I read about it here, on this thread. Thank you for making me look!

Do you have an idea on the length of time it needs to be off to experience the deep sleep / slower start up?

Mine has never seemed slow to start up - I use it most days weather permitting and it's rare that I might leave it off for more than two days - I have never "noticed" a slow startup, but am not looking for it either... The vf seems to be active in 2-3 seconds.

They are much better supporting their existing user base with firmware updates than JIP.

I think 2-3 seconds is quite long, so that would be the "slow" startup from deep sleep. Otherwise, it should take no longer than 1 second.

No.

Back at launch the time was around 5 secs (as Sam mentions above) and I vaguely recall someone mentioning 7 way back in the initial thread about it.

Mine never took that long so I am guessing one of the initial updates was applied to subsequent batches.

Yeah mine never took that long.

I think something is wrong if it takes 2-3 seconds when it's not from a deep sleep.

Odd. My S5II is now about 2-3 sec from deep sleep, and very fast from after that. It was about twice as slow before this update.

Thanks Joseph. I am not that worried about how fast or slow the initial startup is. I can even do a dummy start before the serious business even if necessary.

I would worry more about battery drain when not in use if it were to constantly monitor the camera settings when switched off. Something like the S1 perhaps where if the camera was not used for a week when left with fully charged battery the battery would be flat on attempted start up. Such a compromise - if this were a possibility - has its own sets of problems.

I will obviously update the software. I am not one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I timed it last night on the G9II. 2.9sec from startup to seeing the rear LCD turn on. Thereafter nearly instantaneous, as previously described.

Now that you mention it, I think my G9 is the same.
