Laowa 200 f2, EF mount!

What is Laowa thinking with this product release? They should have released it on the RF mount!
No doubt they would love to. But they can't, ask Canon why.
The irony, for anyone who thinks Canon is driven by anything else but greed.
They made their business decision. I do not like it, but I am too old to switch brands, so I will stay with them and keep using my EF Sigma lenses. They have equivalent lenses (50 and 135), which are way too expensive for me, and not significantly better, optically speaking. And one has no equivalent (60-600) - which has been updated for Sony and L mount.

Canon have to ask themselves what is best for them in the long run. If I were younger, I would switch to another brand, probably Nikon, because their lens mount is open to competition, and their cameras are excellent. Same if I were to start from scratch today.

Actually, Nikon's lens mount is also regulated and there are third party lenses that aren't allowed in Z mount. Even Sony won't allow teleconverters with third party lenses or their highest frame rates. Canon never opened their EF and FD mounts to competition either, they were just easier to reverse engineer.

For as long as you continue to mouth such "justifications" you too are part of why they will never change.

None of us are part of anything Canon. You seem to have difficulty attributing credit where it is due. And you seem to have no difficulty throwing out random accusations without any real basis. It's not good to get your frustration lead to desperation

I am still waiting to hear what you would like canon to do and what is in it for them. If it makes sense, I'm real curious to see why they don't see it and you do. Or maybe it's just smoke and mirrors

My tendencies are just the opposite. I much prefer the size, weight, operation, and performance of Canon's lineup than Nikon's (or any other brands' for that matter). No way would I want to switch.

Plus I'm one to applaud the lens offerings that Canon has presented to us. They seem to suit me very well. And I'm willing to pay for premium performance in the areas that are important to me (and my shooting). This Laowa even though it is cheaper, simply may not suit me as well as the older Canon EF 200/2.

I know that I may be swimming against the flow, but I don't have a problem with Canon's business model. With RF they saw a way to perform a reset with the new proprietary communications protocols and they jumped at the chance. We're fortunate that they can now devote the needed capital toward R&D and the resulting cutting edge bodies we are seeing. I for one hope this trend continues!

I respect the fact that your preferences may be different, and you should indeed follow your own heart. :-)

It's not a justification, nobody can truthfully deny it, and Canon have changed, though I didn't expect them to. Canon are now licensing the manufacture of RF-S (APS-C format) lenses, which is a big change to a policy that they've had for sixty years. But the only current completely open lens mounts I can think of are the Leica screw mount (since 1932) and the Praktica screw SLR mount (since 1949).

I would think the Canon EF 200mm f/2L would be too heavy for your back.
I know, it's a fattie alright. But I would be using it exclusively for portraits/fashion, so unlike a birding lens (or sports lens), I wouldn't be holding it up for extended periods, and I wouldn't be using it all day. It would be constantly up and down though, so my arms would definitely get a workout! :-)

Unfortunately even the Mk II version of say the 500/4 is still 50% heavier yet, plus its weight is further out. Would love to be shooting with one though!!

My priority is low light photography. R6 MK2 and Canon 200 2.8 II is my current favorite combo allowing me to shoot at ISO 240,000 when needed.

I am looking forward to this new lens. Waiting for others to test first. I really wanted the Sigma 200 2.0 but no Canon version.

Low light is one reason why I have no plans to upgrade to new R6 MK3 with the new 34MP sensor. The max iso dropped to 76,000.
