Is the Oly 12-100mm more susceptible to lens flare than some other lenses? I have noticed what I think is flare, but maybe the light circle in some images is something else. The lens has the factory hood and Hoya HMC super UV(0) filter. The sun was not in the frame in the attached images. Both a M1 mk3 and OM1 show this issue.

I'd suspect something like reflections between the front element of the lens and the UV filter. It sure doesn't look like your typical "looking into the sun" kind of flare, but there is clearly something catching and spreading light there.

Is the lens completely clean? Is the filter? More importantly, do you experience issues like this with the filter removed?

I'll add an image - I pretty much have to shoot straight into the sun to get any kind of flare at all. You can see a light purple blob on the opposite corner from where the sun is.

What I'm seeing on your photos doesn't make a lot of sense, as there isn't any highlight on the other side of the image that seems to correspond to your blobs.

Have not experienced flare beyond that typical for a complicated zoom. Lenstip felt similarly, and has samples that include veiling flare:

Taking into account a very complex optical construction of the lens which includes a lot of movable elements inside the tube and a huge front element as well, we didn’t expect an excellent performance in this category. Still the lens managed to surprise us in a very positive way, especially at the wide angle where we experienced the least of problems. More significant flares might be observed at bigger focal lengths but, with such settings, it is rare to position the sun close to the frame corners and, by doing so, register unwanted light artifacts.

OP samples show just reflection artifacts, perhaps from the filter as you note. A thing to test.

Cheers,

Rick

I sometimes get similar flare when I have a filter on. I remove the filter in backlight situations and in the studio when using hairlight or kicker.

You can also see flare and CA ( purple and green ) in the top right between the sun and trees as you say as long as you keep an eye on the sun you can avoid this

Even the best filters can increase the likelihood of these kind of issues though obviously better than the very inexpensive options

Have you tried without the filter?

No. Haven’t used this lens much in bright, contrasty sun light. Noticed just once before in 2 pics out of a couple hundred. At the time, I thought maybe something landed on the front of the lens, like an insect. Not the case, with the attached pics. Will try without the filter. Haven’t noticed this issue with an assortment of other lenses unless the sun was in the pic or very near then the more typical flaring was obvious.

This is not definitive at all of course, but I have used the 12-100 for going on three years now, usually in bright conditions, and I have never seen that type of flare in my results. I don't use filters on the 12-100 (or any of my zooms or long lenses).

Next time you see it, lock framing in place with tripod and then remove the filter. Then see if flare disappears.

Even just starting to unscrew the filter a couple of degrees and seeing it rotate would show that it's a spot (perhaps dust) on the filter, not a reflection.

A speck of dust on the filter or the front element. I once had a UV filter with a tiny bubble in it. That was back in the day when I used el cheapo filters. I would not expect that from a Hoya, but then there have been fake Hoyas.

Poked around for samples and not finding anything peculiar or flarealiscious.
