Hi all,

I took delivery this Saturday on this lens. I was pretty excited as I really enjoy the look and experience of shooting with the VIltrox 27mm 1.2 Pro.

Here are some early thoughts and feedback.

Build, same as the other lens, with one exception, there is the the whole floating glass thing going on, so anytime its not attached and powered on, lots of stuff moves around internally, and while we all know its “fine” supposedly, its also not a great feeling, and really takes you out of the zone to have the moving parts. But should be fine.

Operationally - AF is great, just like the other Pro lens, maybe even faster honestly, and the YouTube reviews state this as well. However, I was experiencing a compatibility flaw that I just figured out the cause of today… in my main portrait mode I so usually have DR Optmizer on. On every other lens, this is no problem, but for some reason, this lens having DR Optimizer turned on would cause the aperture to continuously close to F4 unprompted. I would shoot at 1.2, then if I paused, it would jump immediately to F4. I was really puzzled by this and tried reinstalling latest firmware, etc, but nothing would fix it. Then I thought to mount the lens via Megadap to my Nikon Z50ii, and it was not doing it at all…. So, I tried playing around with various things, and lo and behold, once I turned DR Optimizer off, all fixed and working properly at this time. Just food for thought, but odd that no other lens (Sony or Viltrox) is doing that on my A7rV.

Rendering - photos here - and of note, these were taken with ProlarPro gold mist diffusion filter on, forgot to save any samples without the filter.

So, I am pretty pleased with adding this lens to my lineup. I think ergonomically it’s very nicely suited to my A7rV, only ok on the smaller Nikon Z50ii (adapted). I will try to get some portrait tests added without the filter.

Anything I can answer I did not speak to with these initial thoughts?

Thanks Mike. The bokeh looks very nice on that lens. If I didn't have my old and reliable Sonnar 55/1.8 I would have considered the Viltrox.

Cheers,

José

I can see that; I never pulled the trigger on that lens, not sure why, but if I had it, I imagine it would be hard to move to this, especially since it is FF image circle.

Mike, hello.
At one point, I handed over the administration of the VILTROX AF 27mm F1.2 Pro E (SONY) group to Joachim Wulf. He either didn't want it or was too shy, so he handed it over to a 27mm F1.2 owner on a German forum. I also invited him to the group when it had two or three members. He categorically refused, arguing that he was perfectly happy in another group where there were mostly Fujifilm camera owners.
When I asked him why he suddenly became an administrator in the group he'd abandoned, he changed the title page and stopped following the Fujifilm photos being posted in the SONY mount lens thread. He left the group, and the administrator was replaced by
Mike Arledge, Jr.
I don't know if he bothered to notify you about this.
This is all a preface to my next question.
At the time of the release of the SIGMA 16mm F1.4 DC DN | I started the Contemporary 017 group on January 18, 2018.
I invited friends and strangers who owned the lens, as well as photography enthusiasts and photographers, to join.
Later, after the release of the SIGMA 56mm F1.4 DC DN | Contemporary 018, I added its name to the group.
Since then, it now has 340 members, and the group seems to have a life of its own.
I suggest you add the new lens to the existing group.
The group name could be similar to VILTROX 27mm F1.2 + VILTROX 56mm F1.2 (AF Pro E SONY)

I have little interest in using Flickr as an admin, but appreciate the thoughts. I only interact with Flickr via iOS apps, so I don’t get those kinds of messages or notifications.

Mike, you can join the group through your browser:
VILTROX AF 27mm F1.2 Pro E (SONY) https://www.flickr.com/groups/viltrox_af_27mm_f12_pro_e_sony/
Go to Administration > Manage your members > select Sergey 2025 from the list of users
/ and assign him Admin status.
I'll add a new lens and invite users and owners of the VILTROX AF 56mm F1.2 Pro to the group.

should be done now
