Flash and the SD Quattro H.

I have been asked by a family member to shoot some fam pics, indoors. Am a landscape guy. So am working to get a setup, working.

First, anyone have experience with an older EF-500 DG Super Flash and the SD Quattro H? Or any Sigma camera released in the recent few years? Am scrabbling through seeing of this older flash will work.

Then.. if possible with these two devices, anyone recommend a setup for the camera with flash on the SD Quattro?

And... if I cannot get the EF-500 to fly right, anyone recommend settings for using a Brand X flash device with the SDQH? You know, the Sunpaks or Canons flash units of the world, which I have...

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I went out recently and grabbed a few snaps of some of the aspens changes here in Colorado. Will post if they appear reasonable. Have not view them in SPP yet.

tx for any advice..

No experience with that specific flash.

There might be mentions of compatible flash units in the camera owners manual.

Nor have i dabbled in fully manual flash work. I assume that a fully manual trigger would be needed.

i do know that a Canon remote flash cord will work on a Sigma camera, but a Canon flash will not.

Have not looked recently, but I would assume that Sigma still makes a flash unit.

i would also assume that a third party Sigma compatible TTL flash does not exist.

David,

I think the EF 500 DG Super would have had to be rechipped to work properly with the sd Q H. Sigma did that free around the time the SD1 Merrill was released. A Nikon Flash like the SB 24 will work either in manual or auto modes but not with TTL or any modern manual or auto flash will do. Do not use older ones unless you are sure of the trigger voltage not more than 6 volts. Canon flashguns will fire only if you insulate the pins other than the main centre one. The very best one for the sd Q H is Sigma's EF 630, a fine piece of kit.

Brilliant. Thank you. I mucked around with some flashes incl the 500 and quickly learned as you said... no go unless it were reconstituted. It did not work of course.

I dialed into a manual mode methodology and have honed some reasonable skills for doing what I need to do. As indicated, I never shoot this kind of setup... a once in a blue moon thing. So have rehearsed enough to pull off the shoot, manually. Will end up with a lot of discards, but this is where SPP shines too. Pulling information from an X3F file that on first view appears scant.

I very much appreciate your detailed response. Your response may very well tip me to acquire an EF 630. This mini shoot is resurrecting some enthusiasm with the SD Quattro H which can be a very fine tool indeed. Have shot almost exclusively with the DP0 and DP1. And landscapes entirely. Have toyed with the idea of selling the three mentioned cameras and going to an FP. But... the outputs from these cameras can be quite stellar so... why?

Anywayz, much appreciated. You may have just sold me on the 630...

Super. Thank you for taking the time to respond. As mentioned in another response, I have ended up going into manual mode settings for this shoot and have committed to several practice sessions to get comfortable with this. Have done this in the past so is not unfamiliar.

But also as mentioned, this shoot is from a family request and it may be stimulating me to acquire an EF 630 and marry it to my SDQ H. Why not aye?

Anywayz, much appreciate your taking the time to share ideas.

Greetings David

I use the EF500 DG Super with my SDQ-H in the TTL mode and red eye deduction turned and all is fine. I also use a Vivitar 285 HV where I set my F stop at F8 red mode shutter speed 125 as it's a flash from my film days.

I shoot some quit pic and post them

I'm back slow day today

So my son has the Sigma EF 500 DG super as he shot a wedding with his SA7n, but here are a couple of pics shot with the Vivitar 285 HV

ISO 125 and 400

Shutter speed 160

F 8

285 HV was set to Red Zone good for about 25-30 feet.

Here we go

Ok, so don't anyone freak out the cameras are ones send to me a while ago to demo and do a assignment and I just have returned them ...................yet. Yes, it's been a while....a long while, they haven't asked for them back yet sooooooo what can I say.

I'm still a Foveon/Sigma fan waiting on the FFF.....................................................

The EF 500 DG usper does great TTL with red eye reduction on and has a AF beam to help in low light. With the Vivitar 285 HV I used a piece of white paper with a rubber band holding it in place

Roger,

The Vivitar 285 HV is an excellent flashgun, with 6V trigger voltage, for use in auto mode or manual, not to be confused with Vivitar 285 which had a trigger voltage of around 250 volts & would fry a modern camera. Your Sigma EF 500 DG Super must have been rechipped or was one of the very late ones rechipped at the factory. Mine was very erratic with the SD1 Merrill until it was rechipped FOC by Sigma.

Hi S

Yes, I forgot to mention my 285 HV has a low trigger voltage. I had it check years ago.

I wasn't aware about the rechipping of the EF 500 DG Super. I'll try mine with the SD1 and see what happens.

Good Luck

Wanted to say thankx all who replied to my S.O.S. on flash. Ended up using a Sunpak with the EF500 as a backup,. in case tho was not needed. Rehearsed for a week and went thru the shoot. Came out fine. Everything manual mode, using metering to dial in and bracketing.

Will post a couple of shots. It was *just* a high school homecoming thing, but was asked to include a bevy of classmates, so was more than just one person. And it of course matters to family and the kiddo, natch.

I like never do this but given the support, recommendations and knowledge acquired, may go out and purchase the Sigma EF-630 anywayz. Tho I will almost never use it. Maybe I will.

This also brings me back to the "good 'ol days". The energy of a SUG, those early gatherings. Like New Mexico which is my stomping grounds. Not the least of which, Laurence. An earlier Las Vegas meetup... the two Dicks... Seng. Kendall and Rick. And on and on. Many others am forgetting so beg pardon.

Anywayzzzz... flash exercise resurrected stuff.
