Hi there,

Three days, 27 km, 3,700 m of elevation gain and 2,000 m down, with a 20 kg backpack (4L of water and XH2S, XF10-24mm. XF150-600mm). It was a bit of a challenge that a friend and I set for ourselves. We suffered after the first day (10 hours of hiking for 11 km and 2000m of D+), which ended with an hour of torrential rain (backpack and stuffs inside were soaked, except camera gear hopefully). The second day was also tough (10 hours and 10 km) with ridge line from start to finish and no water along the route, so we had to set off with enough supplies. On the third day, we were feeling generally tired and ended up walking for 4-5 hours under the blazing sun, which really wore us out, but we were very happy to finish.

All in all it was more of a hiking trip that a photocentric trip but I still came back with few images I enjoy as you can see down below.

C&C welcome.

Cheers everyone

Day 1- forest, that is all due to fatigue, heavy packs, not very photogenic chaotic trails and rain at the end of the day

Day1 - the only rock ptarmigan I manage to see and capture. Lots of people told me they saw plenty but no luck for us

Excellent images Greg. Looking back, would you do this hike again?

Thanks Morris,

This is a very interesting question and I am glad to say a big YES. By checking a little bit more carefully the water supply available on location I may have decided to bring a little bit less, maybe a little less food as well but that would have brought my bag from 20kg down to 18kg, not a huge difference.

the 150-600 was the hardest decision, should I bring it or not, in term of weight and space it was quite a big lump and it does not fit very easily in a hiking backpack. Knowing I could see some ptarmigan on location I could not resolve myself to let the lens at home. I did not got as many chances to use it as I wish/plan but this is the beauty and frustration of this kind of trip, go minimal or go full gear hoping for the best :)

Cheers

I've never taken to backpacking. I preferer day hiking from a car and if going deep into the wilderness I travel by raft, canoe or kayak. This makes bring heavier gear possible yet there are still limits and then there are portages.

Nice series. Really like the middle three of the mountains and clouds.

Good story and images.

first time a plan for Nagano, then train and bus to Kisokomagatake cable car, ride it to the top, hike for 1-2h and you are in the zone.

Joking aside the place is quite accessible and you can really take a cable ride and hike only 1h to see this scenery but to be honest, where is the fun compared to the struggle of hiking with all your gear. The Travel is more important than reaching the goal right ?
Thanks a lot Matt for the feedback, wanna join for next trip ^^?

All accessible by car, right? 😉

Sounds like an amazing journey. Excellent images. Well done!

Beautiful set! Sounds like a challenging and exhausting trek.

Thanks a lot. It was exhausting but when we came down we enjoyed a nice hot spring bath (famous Japanese onsen), then treat ourselves with a large and well deserved meal, and drove 4-5h back home.

This trip gave me some hints about how far I can still push for these kind of trip and also that a lighter kit would be welcome ^^
