Any recommendations for a good on camera flash for a R6ii with 24-105 f4?

The primary use would be for outdoor fill flash. I am going to be attending a family reunion and would like to try using fill flash when people are standing with the sun behind them.

I normally use a lens hood but could take it off if it would cast a shadow. Anything tall enough to not cast a shadow when the lens is zoomed to 35mm or longer without a hood would be fine.

I would like to be able to shoot at a high enough shutter speed to have more control over depth of field so the flash must support high speed sync and have enough power to work up to 15 feet away while using HSS.

I am looking at a V1C which seems to check all the boxes and is reasonably priced. But if there is a less bulky and expensive flash would work just as well for my purposes that would be nice.

I'd have thought you would need a fairly bulky flash in order for it (1) the flash tube to be high enough to avoid annoying shadows from the lens/hood and (2) to have a capacitor big enough for HSS to work at 4½m away at f/4 or smaller and higher shutter speeds than 1/200th.

I've no experience with it, but the V1 looks to tick every box for a current high end flash. Canon's only comparable flash is the EL-1, which quite frankly is just stupidly expensive.

Anything appreciably smaller may be underpowered for what you're listing though. Canon's EL-10 for $220 looks quite interesting though. It's the replacement for the 430 EX-RT III, which I have and is the flash I use most often. I also have a 600 EXII-RT but it stays at home more due to size, and the 430 is the one that goes with me.

And I can confirm the 430 EX doesn't cast a shadow at 24mm with an adapter + EF 24-105L with hood on

If you like the idea of sticking to Canon flashes, a used 600 EX RT original or vII will be in the same price range as a new V1C.

In my experience it's not always easy to find a balance between adding enough flash power to brighten up the faces enough vs not too much to avoid textures disappearing because of too much light coming straight from the on camera flash.

It's also difficult in situations with some faces closer to the camera and others further away. The ones closer to the camera become too bright, the others too dark. It's kind of the same disadvantage of a shallow DOF, you simply need the faces to be at around the same distance to the camera.

430ex rt iii is the perfect size, and very reasonably priced if buying used. It’s what I use, with my R5/RF24-105/4L, in preference to my 600ex rt ii which is just too bulky.

Thanks all, I ordered a used 430ex rt iii. At 1/3 the price of the Godox if it isn't powerful enough for what I want its not much of a loss.

My plan is to use the flash sparingly. Its been a while since I have used a flash but too much flash gives photos a washed out look that is worse than having underexposed faces.

Canon EL 5 flash design for new flash mount rechargeable battery uses the same charger as the R6ii because it doesn’t come with one. recycles fast

Canon flashes = expensive and over priced? (My opinion)

I’m very happy with the Godox system

X3 trigger

a cheaper but good flash is the new Godox v480. This is reasonable small but still decent power. With HSS outdoor, I’m not sure if it’s powerful enough. In shadow, yes, but you’re not going to overpower the sun.

bigger flashes like the Godox V1 or the older v860 iii has more power, but are bigger.

Godox is easy to expand later with more flashes.

Very good. The 430 will have plenty of power. A Canon flash will also maximize compatibility. I really like the Eneloop XXX (black) AA NiMH batteries. If you get the kit with the charger, keep in mind that you've reached full charge when the charge indicator lights go OFF (not when they turn green)!

Be sure to use a hood, especially when shooting towards a light source.

You can also add a hotshoe extender if you want more elevation for your flash (this also helps to fight red-eye)...

Godox Flash Riser

Happy shooting!

the EL-5 is priced comparable to the Godox V1. I have the V1 and the foot needs repair and a lot of people on the forums have a similar complaint. But if you have the new lash mount would you want the flash that goes with it ?

Where I live the EL-5 is double the price of the V1. V100 still cheaper than the EL-5.

I have heard about mount problems with Godox, but only with Sony-versions. (Plastic mount) ?

They are the same price here but I got mine for 250 last year

I have one, and use it with my RP and 24-105 4.0L Works great for fill and indoors, bounced, it fills the room with even, contoured light. I found I prefer bouncing it behind me, up toward to ceiling best.

The yongnuo ones are great. I use yn685ii

If using trigger for OCF, get a pair of yn622cii's

This is what I use on my R6. If I'll be doing a lot of indoor photos, I'll use the 580 EX II.
