September 2025 Part 1 — This Month Through Your Adapter Lens

As expected for an Optical lens and that focal length (which I really like) it's an exceptionally fun lens to use:

Your lighting is phenomenal. I don't know how you filled it so smoothly but that helped reduce the CA. The lovely soft out-of-focus areas do come at a cost to subject sharpness and large amounts of "blooming", but it still works really well as an image.

I'd love to know how you handled the lighting and it would be nice to see how the FL handles out-of-focus highlights too.
Luck.

The lighting was crazy, there was a white neon light on the wall on the left, tungsten overhead, led lights behind me.

Though I do get some CA sometimes....this was pretty flat light; outside and overcast.

Great performance, and beautiful pictures. The one with the tree is amazingly visually magnetic, I keep looking at it :-) Really nice colors too. Super cool lens and great use here!

I agree with you. I love both of these images.

This is a lens I use on my Nikon DSLRs; it makes all of them shine, just like your great shot.

My copy is very well worn. Focus is smooth without backlash but the aperture ring is a bit tight.

Glass is surprisingly clean for being more than 50 years old (and what appears to be a hard life.)

It's hard to describe the way it renders. Images are sharp but not edgy. Contrast is a bit lower but I think that makes the images more maleable, meaning easy to edit.

I mounted this lens with a DKL to Leica M adapter and a M to CL adapter. I am finding this lens a little annoying The first two pictures, one at about 6 ft the othe of a local pond, look OK both needed light sharpening but they work. When I try to take a photo at infinity or near infinity it turns to mush (third image), this one had some heavy PS Smart Sharpen already. I imagine it might sharpen up with Topaz Ai Sharpener, but not something I like to do. My other Retina lenses have behaved better.

I think anyone would be proud to have taken this wedding photo.

I have a question about a pattern that appears in this photo when viewed "original size." I point out three areas. You may have to view the included close-ups in its 'original size' to see the fine detail. I don't expect the pattern came from the lens. Is it in the original exposure? Did it appear when the original exposure was processed? Does it have something to do with how images are shown here at DP Review? I've not seen something like this before and am curious where it came from, and if you have an idea of how it can be avoided? Thanks.

It seems like this is Enna's version of a Tessar. Fun lens. Not very sharp, but not bad in terms of rendering. Particularly interesting when used reversed (images 2,3,4 & 6) though, no idea why...

The 100mm f/2.0 and f/2.8 macro tend to get all the love, but I really like this light & compact f/3.5. It's sharp from wide open and has pleasing bokeh for a relatively slow lens. Pleasing color rendering too.

Agreed on what a nice lens it is - one of my favorites to adapt to mirrorless. Very similar in performance to the Contax 85mm f2.8 Sonnar and the Contax G 90mm f2.8 version as well (I have the former and sold the latter given it is quirkier to focus manually than either of the 85mm and 100mm SLR versions and offered the same performance characteristics).

The 100mm f3.5 is the perfect size for travel as well.

Finally, I think the 100mm f3.5 gets plenty of love itself on a variety of sites and discussion fora. See the Contax Survival Guide, which provides: "100 3.5 - Like the 85 Sonnar, but slower and possibly even sharper. May be one of the sharpest Contax primes ever made. Certainly sharper than both its larger brothers, the 100 planar and 100 Macro. While it beats them in resolution, bear in mind it does have more distortion (the 100 f2 and Macro 2.8 show their stripes and have almost none!).

There also is a very positive review of the lens on phillipreeve.net.

Good to know. Guess I need to update my internal database! :-)

Thanks much! I'm lucky to have a great location for photographing sunsets within easy walking distance from my house.
