Question of the week: What five questions should you ask yourself when buying a new camera?

Does this camera look almost the same as my 25 others so my wife won't notice!
My solution to that was giving my wife enough money that her quilting kit costs about the same as my hobby. Those tables cost as much as lenses!

High end sewing and quilting machinery can very much give photography a run for the money in terms of cost. With the upside that it can stitch together clothing and blankets :-)

Lots of fun with both!

I would buy several of these if you were selling them! We have some naughty cats around here.

My wife spends hours choosing fabrics, hunting for patterns, working out how to turn the outline elements into a quilt etc, and then days cutting, stitching and pressing.

She has a lot more artistic talent than me, and she is a more natural photographer too.

Just two questions to manage GAS:
  • Why am I looking into buying a new camera?
  • Is there something else I should be doing instead?

Last edited:
1. Do I want to improve or expand capabilities of my current setup?
2. What restrictions of my current setup cause the previous question? Is this camera, lenses, or accessories?
3. How much money can I spend?
4. Am I sure this is not a GAS?
5. What should I tell my wife to justify this purchase?

1. Is this camera suitable to be taken everywhere/every day? (weight/dimensions)

2. is the camera comfortable to hold? (ergonomy)

3. is the basic state after start-up the way you want to use it? Or do things have to be turned on or off before you can shoot (readyness)

4. can you see what you're taking (viewfinder etc)

5 is the lens wide/long/bright enough for the stuff you like shooting? (depend on favourit subject matter)

Rarely do people consider this as they probably should
3. is the basic state after start-up the way you want to use it? Or do things have to be turned on or off before you can shoot (readyness)
True. I'd like to add that it may be a little bit of a mixed situation for more skilled photogs, because they may want a menu or UI that requires greater complexity so that they can program it with the functions that are most valuable to them, so they can be accessed quickly. My SLR seems to be easier to use menu-wise than my mirrorless cameras; part of that is because I've had more experience w/the SLR.
4. can you see what you're taking (viewfinder etc)

Strange question. All cameras I know of start with the same settings used previously but since those settings change depending on the type of photography and the lighting conditions I believe that wish is an impossible one.

If it's an ILC all such cameras are capable of meeting that requirement. For a fixed lens camera it is a very important consideration.

Answer these questions without lying to yourself 🙏

What are the real drawbacks of my current camera?

Would it be better to invest in myself, rather than spending a few thousand dollars to compensate for my flaws?

Am I currently being manipulated by marketing?

Do I need a state-of-the-art camera to impress my neighborhood and feel good about myself?

Are my skills linked to the price of my camera?

If you honestly answered to these five questions, you are ready for the next five. 🤔
These are very good questions! 👍👏

So good I replaced the word "camera" with "motorcycle" and they fit perfectly. 😁
It will work for cars, bicycle, fishing rod, house thermostat, shed... You name it. 😂

I'm making the image of the questions and making Wallpaper on my desktop.

Thanks Moaby.

2. is the camera comfortable to hold? (ergonomically)

If I'm to believe what I see posted here people do consider how comfortable a camera is to hold an important consideration. The problem is #1 and #2 often incompatible with each other so a compromise has to be made. For example my RX100vii is too small for easy handling but I am willing to make a sacrifice in that for the convenience of light weight and easy/convenient carry.

Also because Mirrorless cameras are more capable which requires by necessity a more complex menu system.

I carry a pair of Nikon D5s...
2. is the camera comfortable to hold? (ergonomy)
I would consider handling as the most important after "can I afford it?"
3. is the basic state after start-up the way you want to use it? Or do things have to be turned on or off before you can shoot (readyness)
If it doesn't start up the way I left it, I'm not buying.
4. can you see what you're taking (viewfinder etc)

5 is the lens wide/long/bright enough for the stuff you like shooting? (depend on favourit subject matter)
I'm not even going to think about a camera that doesn't take the lenses I already have.

What are the real drawbacks of my current camera?
For me there are none.
Would it be better to invest in myself, rather than spending a few thousand dollars to compensate for my flaws?
I'm 80 years old so I already know everything I will ever know about photography. I know that a new camera cannot compensate for any flaws I might still have.
Am I currently being manipulated by marketing?
Because of my age I have learned to believe nothing I see in marketing.
Do I need a state-of-the-art camera to impress my neighborhood and feel good about myself?
I am way past the need to impress anybody.
Are my skills linked to the price of my camera?
See my second answer above.

I wish I knew 60 years ago what I know now.

You have 10 years more wisdom than me. 🙏 😉

Yes, you're absolutely right. is it too late to change my answer to what you said?

Are the issues I'm having with current camera (that make me want a new camera) related to the camera or the user??

Will I have the same problems with a new camera?

Will I look back on photos taken with current camera and suffer buyer's remorse?

Is the new camera and lens going to be too heavy and unwieldy for travel?

Can I get a decent amount of money for the camera I will be selling?
